Today’s Big Story

Will Blockbusters Fall Back?

Wonder Woman, James Bond and Netflix are betting big on the fall season

Daniel Craig as James Bond

Like so much of life this summer, the summer blockbuster season was put on hold. Movies were delayed or begrudgingly and quietly released to streaming services.

In fact, Forbes estimates the movie business was down a whopping 98% after pulling in just $67 million since May. Compare that to last summer’s whopping $4 billion cumulative gross.

According to the Wall Street Journal, those classic feel-good summer films are now gearing up to be released, as long as theaters can stay open, in an effort to rekindle moviegoing.

Gal Gadot returns for “Wonder Woman 1984” next month, followed by Scarlett Johansson as Marvel’s “Black Widow” in November. Jordan Peele’s remake of the ’90s slasher classic “Candyman” will be out just in time for Halloween. And Daniel Craig’s final turn as James Bond in “No Time to Die” will arrive just ahead of Thanksgiving.

For those of us who’ve become quite comfortable streaming our entertainment, Netflix promises a hearty season as well with films from such heavy hitters as Aaron Sorkin, David Fincher and Ron Howard.

What Gets Non-Voters to Vote?

It's not their friends ...

In 2016, nearly 100 million eligible Americans did not cast a vote for president—about 43% of the eligible voting-age population, according to the U.S. Elections Project

That means that in the last election, non-voters were a larger constituency than either the Democratic or Republican voter bases. Will they sit-out this November? That's what the Knight Foundation tried to figure out with a new study, out today.

It turns out, the media consumption of non-voters will determine if they're inspired to fill out a ballot. Among the findings: “Chronic nonvoters who are more attentive to news may change their voting behavior this year;” conservative news consumers “are more fired up to vote in 2020;” and “social media and word of mouth via friends and family are consistently tied to lower likelihood of voting.” Here's hoping we see more of them voting this year.

Peloton’s New Spin

The company is betting you won’t want to return to the gym

Not surprisingly, Peloton is one of the companies doing well during the pandemic. Those with the means to buy the smart stationary bikes did so almost immediately. The company reported a 66% increase in sales in the most recent quarter back in May.

On Tuesday, Peloton doubled its product lineup, announcing a cheaper treadmill and more expensive exercise bike. The new treadmill, called the Tread, will be available for $2,495 starting in “early 2021,” while the new Bike+ (also $2,495) is available now.

According to Mashable, the Bike+ upgrades some of the original's most loved features. With a rotating touchscreen and a high-fidelity four-speaker sound system, the bike is optimized not only for Peloton's signature spin classes, but also for floor exercises like ab workouts. And like with other tech launches, the original Bike now has a lower price tag of $1,895.

However, frustrated users have taken to Twitter to complain about the change, including those who just missed the 30-day window for refund eligibility and those who waited weeks for their back-ordered purchases.

FYI: There are currently 2.6 million active Peloton members.

A Sweet Diversion

The Jelly Belly founder is giving away a candy factory. Seriously, he is.

As if the 2020 bingo card could get any more bizarre, there's now a real hunt for a golden ticket to own your own candy factory.

David Klein, the founder of Jelly Belly, is launching a series of golden ticket treasure hunts across the country before his retirement, reports ABC News.

Gold Tickets in the form of a necklace” are currently being stashed across the U.S. Each necklace will come with a tag that has a code where scavengers can verify their finds.

According to The Takeout, each of the 50 states will have its own hunt, kicking off on different days all throughout the fall. Lucky ticket holders will be able to search for a mystery prize valued around $5,000. Once all 50 treasure hunts are complete, everyone who participated will be eligible to search for the key to one of Klein’s candy factories and an all-expenses-paid tuition at a candy-making university. I mean, really, why not?

Meanwhile: Dentists are reporting an epidemic of cracked teeth due to the stress of the pandemic.
