Today’s Big Story

Trump Tests the Law

Despite indictment, The former president vows to stay in the race, even if convicted

Trump

Well, that story developed a lot over the weekend, huh? In case you missed it, the full indictment of former President Donald Trump was unsealed, outlining 37 counts in relation to the mishandling of records at Mar-a-Lago, as well as his efforts to block the government from recovering the documents. The filing indicates that Trump weighed a number of methods to avoid returning them, asking his attorney to “hide or destroy” the documents in his possession following a June subpoena last year.In fact, it was his own lawyer's notes that essentially gave prosecutors a road map to building their case. Identified as “Trump Attorney 1” in the indictment, M. Evan Corcoran's extensive notes were submitted to the grand jury over Trump's objection. The special counsel overseeing the investigation, Jack Smith, was able to bypass attorney-client privilege because a federal judge ruled that Trump had misled Corcoran to thwart investigators. And while Trump will have to take tomorrow off from campaigning to be arraigned in Miami, the investigation doesn't seem to be slowing him down. He remains the early Republican front-runner for the presidential nomination. Speaking to a crowd in Georgia, Trump called the indictment baseless and blamed a “weaponized Department of Injustice” for a “vicious persecution.”He later told Politico that he would continue to campaign even if convicted. Interestingly, Trump is not legally prohibited from running for president from prison or as a convicted felon. But such a bid would nevertheless provide a massive stress test for the country's political and legal systems.Meanwhile, some are saying that the judge who will oversee the case—a Trump appointee, who has previously ruled in his favor—could present unique challenges for the Justice Department. Aileen Cannon, a former prosecutor who's spent two and a half years on the bench, will guide how quickly the case goes to trial and determine what evidence can be presented to the jury. Then again, the jury might not even need to see everything. Trump's former Attorney General Bill Barr told Fox News Sunday that Trump is “toast” if “even half” of the material in his indictment is true.

Here's how Walt Nauta, a Navy veteran and the former president's personal aide, came to be charged as Trump's co-conspirator.

A Lot of Food Poisoning Could Be Prevented

The CDC Says better Paid sick leave policies could reduce the risk of spreading foodborne illnesses

Nearly half of all of food poisoning outbreaks can be linked to sick restaurant workers who went to work anyway, according to a new CDC report. The study examined 800 foodborne illness outbreaks reported by 25 state and local health departments between 2017 and 2019. Of the roughly 500 outbreaks linked to at least one known contributing factor, 205 of them, or 41%, involved ill workers.Investigators traced 95% of outbreaks with a confirmed or suspected cause to either bacteria or a virus. The most common cause was norovirus, which is highly contagious and was connected to 47% of these outbreaks. Infection with salmonella—a bacterium that causes all sorts of unpleasantness—caused 19% of the outbreaks. To combat these outbreaks, “comprehensive ill worker policies will likely be necessary,” the report said. It highlighted research that showed that expanded paid sick leave reduced how often food service workers showed up at work sick, and noted that paid sick leave regulations were directly tied to decreased rates of food-borne illness. Daniel Schneider, a professor of social policy at the Harvard Kennedy School, told the New York Times that the report was “sobering,” and highlighted that the United States is the only wealthy country with no federal paid sick leave.

While a broken leg is easily treatable for humans, it’s often a death sentence for horses. In general, if a horse can’t stand on all four legs on its own, it won’t survive and will be euthanized.”

U.S. National Trails System Expanded

More than 340 Miles were just added in Nine States

First, some mildly bad news ... we missed National Trails Day (which, if you didn't know, was on June 3rd). But the good news? The United States' National Trail System just added more than 340 miles worth of new trails to the official map.Secretary of the Interior Deb Halaand announced the addition in celebration of the holiday, adding “These trails offer an abundance of opportunities to experience the breathtaking landscapes of our country, all while supporting outdoor recreation activities and boosting local economies.”According to Men's Journal, the new trails span nine states and join an impressive network of long-distance Scenic Trails, nationally significant Historic Trails, and more than 1,300 smaller National Recreation Trails.

Want to Rent Out Your Car on Uber?

App bringing its Turo-like car-rental service to North America

Uber is continuing its expansion on all-things-wheeled. The ride-hailing and delivery app company just announced plans to bring peer-to-peer car sharing to North America. Uber apparently got into the car-sharing business last year in Australia after acquiring a company called Car Next Door. The service, which lets users rent out their vehicles, has since been rebranded Uber Carshare. Now, starting with Toronto and Boston, users can fire up the app to browse and reserve vehicles, which will be available to rent by the hour or the day. Car owners can set their own daily and hourly pricing, and availability will be listed in 15-minute increments, with no requirements for advance booking. Fuel is included in the cost, and insurance options are available for purchase from Uber.Of course, car-sharing is not a new idea. Zipcar, now a unit of Avis Budget Group, has offered it since 2000. Then there's Getaround, which works a lot like Uber's new program. And Turo, which is well-known for its selection of high-end and vintage cars. Any of which, I think we can agree, is a whole lot better than walking into a Hertz and all the uneasiness that comes with that experience.

FYI:

As of the end of last year, Turo had over 160,000 active hosts, 320,000 active vehicles, and 2.9 million active guests worldwide.
