Today’s Big Story

Live Music’s Return

What to expect from big concerts and festivals in the U.S. this summer and beyond

Live Music

When do big concerts return? It’s a complicated picture right now as some musicians sell out shows and others postpone them yet again. Just last week, Travis Scott’s fall Astroworld Festival sold out quickly, while Justin Bieber delayed his tour another year.

This summer, the concert business will re-open gradually—thanks to vaccination efforts in the U.S. and U.K. But bigger concerts in arenas and stadiums could take until late summer and fall to gain momentum.

Here in Los Angeles, people were celebrating the return of The Hollywood Bowl in July. And while many tours are still in shuffle mode, one thing is clear: there will finally be live music this summer. Not the glut that we’ll see in 2022—which is already projected to out-schedule bookings from our pre-pandemic lives in 2019, according to Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino.

The Wall Street Journal reports that many of this year’s summer concerts “will be outdoor-oriented, including a high number of amphitheater shows and festivals.” That’s because they currently face fewer capacity restrictions and tend to involve less elaborate productions, making them easier to stage.

The big shows take time to prepare. Unlike movie theaters and museums, superstar concerts can’t turn on a dime. Arena and stadium shows are booked well in advance, since musical acts are competing with sports leagues for time slots.

Then there are festivals, which have crammed into late summer and fall, creating what could be the biggest fall season for festivals ever. There’s the Rolling Loud hip-hop festival in July, followed by Bonnaroo, and Firefly in September, Outside Lands and Austin City Limits in October. Of course, as we’ve all learned, just because a date is listed, doesn’t always mean the show will go on.

Meanwhile: The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2021 inductees have been announced. JAY-Z and Foo Fighters have been inducted after being nominated in their first year of eligibility.

The Gaza Conflict Is Escalating

Communal violence erupts in Israeli cities following air strikes and rocket attacks

In the worst flare-up of violence in seven years, Israel launched hundreds of airstrikes and Palestinian militants fired hundreds of missiles so far this week, killing more than 70 people on both sides and injuring hundreds more amid rising fears that the conflict could spiral into all-out war.

What started as a week of tense clashes in Jerusalem escalated Wednesday into an aerial conflict and violent unrest on the streets of mixed Arab-Israeli towns.

And the fighting shows no signs of letting up. An Israeli military official told the New York Times that three infantry brigades were “preparing for a worst-case scenario,” confirming that a ground invasion could follow the bombardment from the air.

But the most unexpected developments occurred on the streets of Israeli cities and towns, as rival Jewish and Arab mobs attacked people, cars, shops, offices and hotels. In remarks Wednesday evening, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a message to the citizens of Israel. “I do not care if your blood is boiling,” he said. “You cannot take the law into your own hands.” Netanyahu also said he would redeploy police and Israel Defense Forces to mixed ethnicity cities.

People are Talking About AirTags

They’re “terrifyingly good” but may also be susceptible to hacks

Ever since Apple announced their new AirTags—tiny, tracking devices you can attach to anything you don't want to lose—people have been both excited and suspicious.

CBS News, for example, said they're “terrifyingly good” at tracking and warned that security experts were saying it presents a “double-edged sword” when it comes to privacy concerns.

Then Ars Technica reported how a security researcher successfully broke into the microcontroller. The risk here is not that someone could jailbreak an AirTag and use it to track your location without your permission. Rather, the risk is that a jailbroken AirTag could be used in a phishing scheme to trick you into sharing personal information with a nefarious party.

So did Apple miss something when designing security for AirTag item trackers? And should you be concerned? According to 9to5Mac, the reality is that no software is perfect, and all computers have risks associated with security exploits that are regularly discovered and repaired.

Regenerated Forests

Woodlands as big as France have grown back since 2000, research shows

Here's some good news as we wind down the week: Enough regenerated forests around the world that have grown naturally over the past two decades could cover nearly all of France.

The restored forests have the potential to soak up the equivalent of 5.9 gigatons of carbon dioxide—more than the annual emissions of the U.S., reports the BBC.

An analysis of satellite data by a team of researchers led by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), a conservation group, found there is enormous potential of natural habitats to recover when given the chance to do so. The research looked at forests that have grown back spontaneously or with little human help, such as planting native trees or fencing off land to reduce grazing.

But the researchers said such “encouraging signs” could not be taken for granted, warning that the world was still losing forests at a “terrifying rate,” much faster than that of restoration.

FYI: Scientists say that regenerating forests is a better climate change solution than planting trees, because existing forests absorb more planet warming gasses while also safeguarding wildlife and biodiversity.

An Easy Way to Combat Hair Loss

One spray, two effective ingredients

By now, you're familiar with hims—the men's wellness brand that offers both over-the-counter and prescription solutions to the kind of problems that have typically kept men from going to see the doctor. I've personally used the service for years. And what's impressed me is the brand's constant innovation.

Case in point: one of their most popular treatments for hair loss is the prescription drug finasteride, which is a daily pill that reduces the hormone in your scalp that causes hair loss. They also offer a topical solution, minoxidil, which has been proven to regrow hair. But if an oral medication feels like an overwhelming way to treat male pattern hair loss, their new spray could be for you.

It combines the two clinically-proven medicines in an easy-to-apply spray. It's not only simpler, but it comes with a lower risk of side effects (including the more concerning sexual ones), than its traditional counterpart. What's more, the fine mist goes on clean and dries quickly, allowing you to style your hair like normal.
