Today’s Big Story

“Brace Yourself”

The nation is told to prepare for a difficult week ahead

COVID-preparations

In a grim assessment of the COVID-19 pandemic, President Trump predicted over the weekend that the coming week would be “one of the toughest weeks” of the outbreak. At the same time, the president expressed frustration with the toll that social distancing measures are taking on the economy, saying, “We cannot let this continue.”

With data projecting cases in several regions hitting their peaks within seven days, NPR reports that the United States could see its deadliest week since the outbreak began.

“This is going to be the hardest and saddest week of most Americans’ lives, quite frankly,” US Surgeon General Jerome M. Adams said in a Sunday appearance on Fox News. “This is going to be our Pearl Harbor moment, our 9/11 moment, only it’s not going to be localized. It’s going to be happening all over the country.”

And despite the federal government deploying 1,000 medical military personnel to New York City to help, several governors said on Sunday that their states were in urgent need of federal help and complained that they had been left to compete for critical equipment in the absence of a consistent strategy and coordination from the White House, reports the New York Times.

Officials are warning that the next two weeks will be crucial in the fight to stop the spread of the virus. As of this morning, the nationwide death toll had gone up to at least 9,627 people, with at least 337,361 infected, according to data compiled by Domo’s global tracker.

FYI:  At the Bronx Zoo, a tiger has tested positive for coronavirus and several other big cats are showing symptoms.

British Prime Minister Hospitalized

Boris Johnson was admitted Sunday for tests

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who was diagnosed with the coronavirus more than a week ago, was admitted to a hospital Sunday for tests, reports Time.

Johnson’s office said he was hospitalized because he still has symptoms 10 days after testing positive for the virus. He hasn't appeared on TV since his diagnosis, only issuing short video messages from his cellphone.

According to NPR, the UK's health secretary, Matt Hancock, said Sunday that 195,524 Britons have been tested, with 47,806 testing positive. More than 16,000 have been admitted to hospitals with coronavirus symptoms. Of those who have contracted the virus, at least 4,934 have died.

Meanwhile: The Queen of England gave a rare address on Sunday, providing a rallying message to the UK and Commonwealth.

NASA Is Planning a Lunar Base Camp

They’re looking to establish a sustained human presence on the Moon

NASA has released a report detailing how it intends to set up a base on the moon as part of its Artemis program. The base camp and space station would serve as a launching point to send astronauts to Mars.

"For years to come, Artemis will serve as our North Star as we continue to work toward even greater exploration of the moon, where we will demonstrate key elements needed for the first human mission to Mars," said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine.

According to Digital Trends, the planned lunar base would include elements like a vehicle for transporting astronauts around the moon’s surface, some kind of mobile habitation to allow astronauts to travel across the moon for up to 45 days at a time, and a more permanent lunar habitation structure where up to four astronauts could live for short periods.

There's something very hopeful about these plans. In the short-term, the future is nothing if not unpredictable. But we know where we want to go in the long run, and you've got to keep your eye focused there.

FYI: Like the International Space Station before it, this will be designed to be scaled up over time.

How to Level Up in Self-Isolation

Put that extra time to good use

We all know that the best way to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus is to practice social distancing and stay home. So you'd might as well put that extra time indoors to good use.

According to Highsnobiety, "the world is going to look quite different when we eventually emerge from our bedrooms, and it can’t hurt to have a few new skills under your belt when that day comes."

And good news: many prestigious, expensive and often restricted courses have been made available online to encourage people to stay indoors. They've rounded up the best ones to make it easier than ever to skill up.

And if you're interested in coding, Business Insider has seven free coding classes on everything from JavaScript to SQL, from the platforms recommended by Bill Gates. Use your time wisely and something positive can come out of this unfortunate set of circumstances.

What’s in Your Go Bag?

Mine definitely includes a flask, some quality SPF and a scented candle

Do you have a go bag? Also known as a bug-out bag, these portable kits normally contain the items one might require to survive for, say, 72 hours. After all, disaster can (and usually does) strike when you least expect it.

Matt Hranek's Wm Brown magazine is celebrating the concept on Instagram by asking notable men of style and distinction what would be in their fantasy bug-out bag.

It's definitely fascinating to see what such interesting guys value and gives you some ideas on what you might want to have on hand—whether you're heading out for an adventure or simply hunkering down at home.

Survival Rule of 3: You can survive for three minutes without air, three days without water and three weeks without food.

What We’re Buying

Lululemon Reversible Workout Mat

While it seems like a minor piece of the home workout puzzle, a yoga or workout mat can make the difference in getting a good sweat on. Even if you don't have a dedicated space in your home, you can make one for a short period of time with a yoga mat. This version from Lululemon is lightweight and extra grippy. It's made for commuting, but in today's terms, that means it stores much more ease than your standard thicker mat. The company's even offering home workouts to help keep you active and engaged.
