As college enrollment drops, trade school sign-ups are on the rise

Trade School

Is nature healing? For a while now, we've heard the “America is short on skilled labor” alarm bells going off. And they're not wrong. There are actually shortages of around half a million construction workers, the same for auto technicians, and more than 800k manufacturing jobs. (Plus, there's a scarcity of carpenters.)But we're now seeing an encouraging sign that the tide may be turning. According to the Associated Press, while almost every sector of higher education has fewer students registering for classes, many trade programs are thriving. Trade programs are often more affordable than a traditional four-year degree, students have noted, and, for many, skilled trades offer a more obvious path to a reliable job and a good living. The Hustle found similar data. Sure, trade schools are cheaper than college, but it's more about what happens after: The promise of actually having a job. Federal data shows trade school students are more likely to be employed after school than their high-spending university counterparts—and much more likely to work in their fields of study, too.And those trade jobs are hardly paying beans. Per Georgetown University's Good Jobs Project, many are among the 30 million jobs paying more than $55,000 per year that don't require a four-year degree. What's more, they likely have little to no student loans hanging over their heads. And the peace of mind that most of these trades mean they'll always have work. The plumber or woodworker isn't worried about AI taking their job. And while STEM education, in the words of the U.S. Department of Education, impart “21st century career readiness and global competitiveness” for students, many high schools are now beefing up their vocational training. And at a majority, most can actually leave school for paid part-time jobs, many of which become full-time immediately after graduation.

The number of Americans aged 55 and older who are part of the workforce has not returned to pre-pandemic levels.

When Cable News Becomes the News

Tucker Carlson firing stuns conservatives and Don Lemon Is Dropped from CNN

A slew of surprising media firings—all occurring in less than 24 hours for different reasons—has thrown the TV news industry into something of a tailspin. According to Axios, cable news is already under extraordinary pressure to survive. But the drama engulfing some of the industry's top personnel is putting a spotlight on how chaotic the industry has become.Fox News' abrupt decision to fire its top-rated host Tucker Carlson came directly from Rupert Murdoch, sources told the Los Angeles Times. For awhile, it seemed like he could say whatever he wanted—about minorities, women, false election theories and that the January 6 insurrection had been a largely peaceful protest—without any repercussions. But according to the Washington Post, it was Carlson's comments about Fox management revealed during the Dominion lawsuit that sealed his fate. He now has the distinction for being the only cable news talking head who's worked for (and been fired from) Fox News, MSNBC and CNN.Coincidentally, Don Lemon was let go from CNN on the same day. Lemon tweeted he was “stunned” and that he was informed by his agent Monday morning that he'd been terminated. Some saw this coming, though, as Lemon has been at the center of a string of controversies over his on-air comments and treatment of female colleagues. What these departures will mean for cable news is still to be determined.

Will 3-Wheeled Cars Take Off?

The Automobile Age Began on Three Wheels. Can It really Return to Its Roots?

3-wheeled cars

There's a growing breed of three-wheeled vehicles hitting the market these days (and plenty of concept cars pointing towards similar tri-tire setups). We're so used to the standard four-wheeled rides that you might be surprised that the automobile started out with just three wheels. Richard Trevithick's “puffing devil,” a steam-powered machine of 1801, had three wheels; Carl Benz's Motorwagen of 1885, arguably the first car, had three wheels too. The decision to use three wheels on those vehicles was made for reasons of frugality. Today's forward-thinking automakers are exploring the benefits for different reasons—easier to park, easier to get around increasingly congested cities—but the practicality remains. As the CEO of Aptera tells InsideHook, fewer wheels means less structure, which means less weight, which means less energy consumption and greater range.Aptera makes a streamlined teardrop car that looks like something out of Blade Runner and, you guessed it, glides on three wheels. Of course, when it comes to cars, the driving experience is paramount. And as HotCars points out, the good news is that many of these cars are “immensely fun to drive ... and their low center of gravity means they handle greatly as well.”

in the Market?

SlashGear has compiled a list of the five best (and the five worst) 3-wheeled cars on the market right now.

The Freezer Martini Is a Classic

Despite being a symbol of the modern cocktail zeitgeist, the icy preparation is an old Trick

Ask any bartender worth their olive brine and they'll tell you that the key to good, no great, Martini is that it's served as cold as it can possibly be. Perhaps that's why in today's cocktail zeitgeist, the only Martini that seems to matter is the savagely cold “freezer Martini”—that is, one that's pre-mixed to optimal dilution, then bottled and plunged into subzero temps for a lush, velvety texture.Delivering a perfectly icy Martini with every pour, this storage step may seem obvious, but it's often overlooked as a way to batch your cocktails. Thankfully, bars across the country are adopting this style. And while it might seem like a modern hack, it is not, in fact, a contemporary invention. According to Punch, the freezer Martini's roots trace back to a painfully obvious place: the invention of electric refrigeration. If Martinis aren't your thing, don't worry. There are plenty of build-in-a bottle cocktails that you can whip up and store in your freezer door. Fatherly has a a handful of recipes that you could try. That way, you have a customized, ready-to-pour drink waiting right beside your ice cube tray.

FYI:

Whitebox Cocktails has just added canned dirty martinis to its lineup of popular ready-to-drink cocktails. But don't store these in the freezer.
