Today’s Big Story

The Influence Battle

Democratic front runners are calling in for reinforcements

Bernie merch

It seems that we've reached the point in the race for the Democratic presidential nominee that our two front-runners are looking to branch out in order to gain new support.

“Even the staunchest Bernie Bro might be willing to acknowledge one criticism of the presidential hopeful: Sanders’s official merch is predictably unhip,” writes GQ's Cam Wolf. “So people outside the campaign have stepped in to create merch for voters who care as much about universal health care as they do about looking good.”

And while he acknowledged that these are just T-shirts, we’ve repeatedly seen the impact good products can have on a campaign. Shepard Fairey’s “Hope” image became instantly iconic when unveiled in 2007. And the “Make America Great Again” hats are now so recognizable, anyone wearing a red cap could be seen as a Trump supporter.

As for Joe Biden, he scored an endorsement Sunday from Senator Kamala Harris—the latest of his former rivals to give a nod to the former vice president’s candidacy, reports the Washington Post. He's racked up the most endorsements from former Democratic primary candidates since his victory in the South Carolina primary.

Sanders painted Biden's endorsements as an effort by party elites to unite against him, saying the establishment “forced” Klobuchar and Buttigieg to drop out. He did, however, score a high-profile endorsement himself on Sunday.

Jesse Jackson, the longtime civil rights activist (and former presidential candidate) endorsed Sanders, offering support that the senator and his team hope will rally black voters to their side ahead of a make-or-break Democratic primary race in Michigan on Tuesday.

Virus Lockdowns: Coming This Way?

Governments around the globe are boosting efforts to halt the spread

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases globally exceeded 105,000 on Sunday, as infections spread to new parts of the US and Italy quarantined some 17 million people in an attempt to get a handle on the growing epidemic. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has locked down its Qatif region, where all 11 of the country's coronavirus cases have been confirmed.

Connecticut, Missouri, Washington, D.C. and Vermont announced their first cases over the weekend. The Wall Street Journal reports the virus is now in well over half of US states, with nearly 540 confirmed cases and a total of 22 deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University as of Monday morning.

Six states have declared states of emergencies, granting their governors additional powers to combat the virus’s spread. And Italy's lockdown came after the World Health Organization urged governments to take decisive action to halt the spread of the infection.

And with additional infections popping up in new parts of the country, US officials are urging people not to gather in large groups. It makes you wonder if such large-scale lockdowns are coming our way.

Space Tourists Will Launch Next Year

SpaceX will fly three people to the International Space Station

The International Space Station will soon moonlight again as a space hotel.

According to CNBC, Houston-based start-up Axiom has signed a deal with SpaceX to send three privately paying civilians into space.

They'll travel aboard a Crew Dragon capsule that will be deployed by a Falcon 9 rocket, the companies said. The tourists will be accompanied by an "Axiom commander," and will spend a total of 10 days in space—eight aboard the ISS and two traveling to and from.

The news comes as SpaceX safely landed its 50th rocket booster in five years, according to NPR.

FYI: Since its launch in 2012, Dragon has delivered over 95,000 pounds of cargo, and returned over 76,000 pounds back to Earth.

They’re 3-D Printing Houses Now

And it provides Austin’s homeless a real home

Austin is in the midst of a bitter fight over the city's growing homeless population. But one local start-up is trying to alleviate the problem in a really modern way: by 3-D printing houses for those in need.

Icon is the company that designed the oversized printer that "prints" walls by extruding a concrete-like material, which they believe can help substantially drive down the cost of housing.

To be fair, the whole house isn't printed. According to Fast Company, the walls are printed in about 24 hours and the rest of the house is built traditionally. But due to the low cost of the material, the houses can be meaningfully less expensive to build.

The material is also more resilient in disasters like hurricanes than a traditional stick-built house. That’s one reason why these homes could be especially useful for affordable housing.

Are You Ready for Spring Weather?

Make sure you’ve got some adaptable footwear

Spring is notorious for unpredictable weather. One day it's sunny and warm. The next day it's chilly and drizzling. And sometimes it all happens in the same 24 hours.

Which is why you need a good pair of boots—the kind that are comfortable, durable and resistant to any and all forecasts.

Our own Scott Woolf did the necessary research for you and has rounded up a few of our favorite pairs. Some are completely waterproof, while others are simply hardwearing and handsome.

But one thing's for sure. You'll want a pair. Me? I'm eyeing the blue Wallabees.
