Today’s Big Story

Outbreak Delays

So much for “The show must go on ...”

James Bond

As the coronavirus continues to spread, more events are being canceled or postponed amid several travel restrictions and increasing health warnings from officials.

Apple, Amazon, Facebook and Twitter have all pulled out of SXSW, the film, music and tech conference in Austin that kicks off next week.

And on Wednesday, No Time to Die, the latest James Bond movie (and Daniel Craig's last), was officially postponed from April to November. Later in the day, the Ultra Music Festival in Miami was canceled.

Meanwhile, all sporting events in Italy will be played without anyone in the stands and the summer Olympics in Tokyo are considering postponing until later in the year.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, analysts believe the disruptions caused by the coronavirus outbreak could cost the entertainment industry more than $5 billion.

Sick of Political Texts?

So is everyone else. How effective can they be?

The numbers are staggering ... Over a billion texts will be sent during this election cycle. It's clear, mobile messaging has exploded in political campaigns.

According to Fast Company, they're generated using a new breed of peer-to-peer texting apps that exploit a gap in communications law to hit up your phone without your permission. They allow campaign volunteers to send a large number of texts to voters one at a time.

These were a novelty in 2016, a staple in 2018, and will be indispensable for campaigns at all levels in 2020. They're being relied on because we all screen/ignore phone calls, but still pay attention to any text that pops up.

But are they effective? And do they risk turning off voters already inundated with political advertisements? The fact that many young voters sat out Super Tuesday (possibly contributing to Bernie Sanders' losses) might answer that rhetorical question.

FYI: The first text message was sent in 1992.

Twitter Is Testing Disappearing Tweets

It’s called “fleets,” for “your fleeting thoughts”

Twitter is testing its own version of Stories. In an announcement on Wednesday, the company said it will begin to trial a new sharing format called "Fleets," starting in Brazil, which will let users post ephemeral content to its social network for the first time.

Unlike standard tweets, the Fleets can’t receive likes, replies or retweets. And they’ll disappear entirely after 24 hours. According to Wired, Fleets seem to take a cue from the rise of tweet-deleting, as much as from the rise of ephemeral posting on other social platforms.

Apparently, Twitter has reportedly been working on ephemeral posts for more than a year, reports The Verge. So they must think this will help them gain some of the ground they've lost to Instagram, TikTok and other social platforms.

Personally, I would like to have seen an "edit" button for regular Twitter before these fleeting Fleets.

Is a Million Dollars Enough to Retire?

Here’s how long $1 million in retirement lasts in cities across the US

I'll be honest, I probably have more investments in my closet and on my walls than in my IRA account. And who knows, maybe I can sell some things to boost that retirement account before I need to cash out. But I know I'll need plenty to live comfortably in my later years.

According to CNBC, having a million in the bank has long been considered the gold standard of retirement savings. But a new report has measured just how far $1 million in savings will go in cities across the country.

The difference is shocking. In some areas, that kind of stash can stretch over 40 years. But in more in-demand, higher-priced cities, your cash may only last you a decade. Or even less.

Considering how few Americans are actually saving enough for their retirement, it's good to know where we should be relocating to. Unfortunately, I'd much rather retire in Northern California than Kansas.

FYI: Acording to the Government Accountability Office, around 29% of households age 55 and older have neither retirement savings nor a pension.

Other Things We’re Talking About Today

Smells Like Action

Men can smell when a woman is turned on, according to science

Turns out, female arousal may have a distinct scent, and men can apparently pick up on it, reports The Cut.

New research from the University of Kent found that men can actually distinguish between the scent of a woman who’s turned on and one who’s not feeling it. And not surprisingly, the findings suggest that men are more attracted to women who smell horny.

Scent has long played a significant role in sexual attraction. Some studies have shown that men can subconsciously pick up on the scent of ovulation and that they’re attracted to women at this stage in their menstrual cycle. Other studies found that women are typically attracted to men whose immune-system genes are dissimilar to theirs—which makes their natural body odor more alluring.
