Today’s Big Story
The AR-15
The rifle has surged in popularity and now looms large in the American psyche
It happened again. On Monday, America experienced its 129th mass shooting of the year in Nashville. And the cycle repeats. President Biden addressed the shooting, calling the deaths of six people, including three elementary school children, “a family's worst nightmare,” and urging Congress to enact gun-control legislation. But even with majorities in both houses of Congress during Biden's first two years in office, Democrats were unable to pass a ban, and any effort now would be all but certain to die in the Republican-controlled House. And threats at the local level can actually increase demand. Gun store owners across Washington state say that AR-15 sales are through the roof due to a proposed assault weapon ban that's currently making its way through the legislature. And it's already incredibly popular.About one in 20 U.S. adults (that's roughly 16 million Americans) own at least one AR-15-style rifle, according to polling from Ipsos and the Washington Post, which traced the explosion of the firearm from its military origins to one of the country's most popular and deadliest weapons. At least one of the firearms carried by the Nashville suspect was an AR-style rifle, according to police.Over the past decade, the AR-15 has gained a polarizing hold on our collective imagination. Its silhouette is instantly recognizable and somehow uniquely American. Perhaps that's why one Republican lawmaker, Rep. Barry Moore of Alabama, introduced a bill last month to declare the AR-15 the “National Gun of America.” Seriously. But it's also become a stark symbol of the gun violence epidemic in America. Ten of our 17 deadliest mass shootings since 2012 have involved the semi-automatic rifle. And fear of the carnage they cause was actually what kept police from entering the school in Uvalde, Texas. But when did they become so prolific? According to the Post, the shift began after the 2004 expiration of a federal assault weapons ban that had blocked the sales of many semiautomatic rifles. A handful of manufacturers saw a chance to ride a post-9/11 surge in military glorification while also stoking a desire among new gun owners to personalize their weapons with tactical accessories.“We made it look cool,” one gunmaker said. “The same reason you buy a Corvette.” And now every major gunmaker produces its own version of the rifle.

Russia’s Nuclear Chess Game
They’re test-firing missiles and Stationing Nukes in other Countries, A First Since the Soviet Era
Russia's Defense Ministry said Tuesday its military test-fired anti-ship missiles in the Sea of Japan. The supersonic cruise missile has the NATO reporting name SS-N-22 Sunburn, which the Associated Press notes has “conventional and nuclear warhead capacity.”The news comes after Putin announced a plan to station tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus—a country that borders both Russia and Ukraine. Putin pointed out that the U.S. has its own nuclear weapons stationed in partner countries around Europe. Tactical nuclear weapons are shorter-range missiles and bombs than the “strategic” weapons that the U.S. and Russia can use to strike faraway territories. That Putin might deploy such weapons in Ukraine despite international taboos has been part of the debate around the conflict since the start.According to Politico, multiple American officials expressed concerns over the recent moves, many likening it to tensions during the Cold War. Meanwhile, NATO has criticized Russia for what it described as “dangerous and irresponsible” nuclear rhetoric, though a NATO spokesperson said the organization had not seen any official changes in Russia's nuclear posture.

Don’t Fall for ‘Ghost Jobs’
Are you applying for something that doesn't exist?
According to the Labor Department, there were 10.8 million job openings at the start of the year. But if you've been applying to jobs and find that the companies aren't getting back to you, there might not be any problem with your resume ... you may have applied for “ghost jobs.”The term has recently been coined to describe job openings left active online for months and seemingly never filled. In some cases, the job opening might not even exist. In a survey by Clarify Capital, 68% of managers had an active job posting remain active for more than 30 days. The survey also found that there are reasons why companies purposefully post ghost jobs. One reason is that the company is always looking for new employees to make it seem like the company is growing. Another reason may be to motivate current employees. Sometimes it may be unintentional. Zdnet advises that for the best results in your job hunt, apply for jobs directly on the company's website. Applying there minimizes the risk of falling into ghost job and job scam traps.
FYI:
Career websites typically agree that the best time to look for a job is right at the start of the New Year when there is a spike in hiring.
Jack Daniel’s Goes Back to Its Roots
The 12-Year Whiskey Is the Distillery’s Oldest in over a Century
Jack Daniel's, the legendary name in American whiskey, has been in the news lately for a bizarre Supreme Court case in which the brand is defending its trademark against the manufacturers of a dog toy that's shaped like, well, a bottle of Jack Daniel's. That's not really worthy of this esteemed newsletter, but this is: the latest limited releases in the distillery's Aged Series has just dropped. The series, which launched last summer with the brand's first 10-year aged-stated whiskey in more than a century is now back and is introducing a 12-year release. Bottled at 107 proof, the 12-Year comes from a mashbill of 80% corn, 12% malted barley, and 8% rye. However, the brand has stated that this is not from the same barrels as Batch 1 of the 10 Year from 2021. The profile of the whiskey is said to be sweet and creamy with notes of tobacco and butterscotch and more molasses and brown sugar on the nose.

The bottles are available nationwide this month, priced at $80 for the 12-year and $70 for the 10-year.
