Today’s Big Story

The Great Resignation Isn’t Slowing Down

4.3 million people quit their jobs in January and new research highlights why people are leaving

Great Resignation

The pandemic-era phenomenon known as the Great Resignation shows no sign of slowing down, as 4.3 million people quit their jobs in January, according to new federal data issued Wednesday.

January’s number of quits is down just slightly from December, but remain shockingly high, according to experts. And this comes off a year in which almost 48 million people quit their jobs, an annual record, reports CNBC.

There have been plenty of reasons floating around for why so many people decided to leave—everything from escaping burnout and finding more meaning in their jobs to seeking employment in places with healthier work cultures. But above all, it was about getting more money, according to a just-released survey by the Pew Research Center.

Low pay and lack of opportunities for advancement (in other words, low future pay) were the top two reasons cited, with 63% of respondents saying these were major or minor reasons they quit last year.

“The Great Resignation is more a story about strong demand for workers, rather than a rethink of work among higher-income workers,” writes an economic research director for  Indeed’s Hiring Lab. But both blue-collar workers and white-collar professionals are utilizing this as an opportunity to improve their work life. And that is why NPR’s Planet Money has recoined this period as “the Great Renegotiation.”

And so far it seems to be working out for employees. According to CBS News, the majority of people who switched to new roles said they were in fact enjoying higher pay and now see more opportunities for advancement.

FYI:  According to Bloomberg, new research shows the low unemployment rate (now 3.8%) has led many workers to feel more confident to seek higher wages.

Conditions Worsen in Ukraine

Russian strikes hit several civilian buildings, including a maternity hospital

A Russian airstrike devastated a maternity hospital Wednesday in the besieged port city of Mariupol amid growing warnings from the West that Moscow's invasion is about to take a more brutal and indiscriminate turn.

The reported assault occurred after the World Health Organization said it had verified 18 attacks on health facilities in Ukraine.

It also came amid a fresh attempt to evacuate civilians Wednesday after Russia and Ukraine announced routes for people to leave hard-hit cities. After accusing Putin's forces of shelling the escape routes four days in a row, Ukrainian officials remained skeptical of the temporary cease-fire announcements.

As the war heads into its third week, the highest level peace talks are scheduled to take place today in Turkey, the New York Times reports. Meanwhile, the Kremlin accused the United States of waging an “economic war” against Russia as even more businesses announced they were suspending operations in the country.

FYI: The House approved a massive spending bill Wednesday night, rushing $13.6 billion in aid to Ukraine, along with $1.5 trillion to keep government programs operating and avoid a shutdown.

Is a Tumblr Revival Coming?

And is it all due to ‘Euphoria’?

Remember Tumblr? One of the OG blogging platforms, it was big in the mid-aughts, but slowly fell out of favor for Instagram and TikTok. Then, after the site banned adult content in 2018, it quickly nosedived in popularity.

I always appreciated the simplicity of such an aesthetic platform. And I'm not alone. As people started missing Tumblr, moodboard Instagram accounts started popping up.

But now Tumblr—which, yes still exists—seems on the verge of a revival thanks to everyone's favorite NSFW teen show, Euphoria. In an interview with Input, Cates Holderness, Tumblr's Trend Expert, said that “When Euphoria first came out in 2019, it resonated immediately with Tumblr users. They loved the cinematography, they loved the storyline.”

According to InsideHook, “fandom is in the platform's life blood, and that's in part because content is more easily curated on Tumblr than any other social media.” Instead of a random assembly of images, it can all be curated around just what you want to see ... “that could be what makes the site return in popularity, driving users to the platform in order to escape, well, everything else on social media.”

Dig Deeper: Mashable put together the inside story of how Tumblr lost its way (and where it can go from here).

NetJets Buys Electric Air Taxis

Forget the hulking SUV or Uber black car ...

The future is now ... or, at least, very very close. Because NetJets, the world's largest business jet company, is the latest air provider to partner with an eVTOL maker to save commuting time for its clients.

Robb Report thinks that you'll soon be hopping into an electric jet rather than using the company limo or UberX. Since they're nimble and able to take off and land vertically, these aircraft will be able to shorten commutes between airports and metro centers. They'll also be able to easily reach remote landing pads.

Many details remain unclear, including when NetJets might possibly take delivery of Lilium's in-development aircraft, called Lilium Jet. But it could certainly give NetJets a foothold in the burgeoning but still-unproven air taxi market.

United Airlines said last year that it was investing in eVTOL maker Archer and placed an order for $1 billion of its aircraft. Archer plans to begin regular manufacturing next year. And just last month, a California-based eVTOL maker announced a partnership with ANA (Japan's largest airline) to establish an aerial ridesharing service in Japan.

FYI: Take a look inside and all the ways the Lilium Jet's flexible cabin can be configured for everything from private flights to cargo drops.

The Best of Both Worlds

Do you know about Delta-8?

Let's get scientific, just for a moment. The two most common cannabinoids found in cannabis are CBD and THC. We hear about CBD a lot these days and, of course, we all know that THC is weed.

Try each strain or style to seewhich one suits your personaltastes and needs.KD8 Delta-8 pre-rollsflight pack, $90 / $66

Delta-8 THC is a psychoactive cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. It continues to rise in popularity because of its similarity to cannabis' best-known cannabinoid: Delta-9 THC. (That's the one responsible for happy feelings, the munchies, relief, laughing at dumb stuff, etc.)

Kushy Dreams' Delta-8 products are a federally legal way to experience euphoria from cannabis. Users report smoking Delta-8 has similar effects to smoking marijuana, while also offering you the CBD that does a body good. It is top-shelf cannabis that ships discreetly to you, and directly to all 50 states.

What We’re Buying

3sixteen BDU Jacket

This is one of the best spring jackets out right now, and it happens to be on sale. Personally, I view olive green as a neutral but also a great color for spring. Made in the USA by the great folks over at 3sixteen, this jacket takes inspiration from Vietnam War-era fatigues. It feels like a nice worn-in vintage military garment that you'd find at your favorite secondhand shop, but it's been modernized with an updated fit and detailing. The ripstop fabric is nice and lightweight so you can easily layer underneath. This is the type of piece that can transition into any season and any wardrobe, and at this price, it makes for an easy investment.
