Today’s Big Story

Are Separate Beds Bad?

For some couples, this unconventional approach has brought them closer

Seperate Beds

Distance, as they say, makes the heart grow fonder. And that's definitely true for some young couples who are snoozing separately. It makes sense, in a way—considering how we all have individual routines and sleep schedules. The hashtag #separaterooms has over 1 million views, filled with couples of all relationship statuses (married, engaged, and dating) giving their followers an inside look at their unconventional setup of individual bedrooms. And while therapists say sleeping separately will impact each couple differently, for these creator couples, it's actually strengthened their relationship while allowing them the space to be themselves.More common, however, is simply separate beds in the same room. A recent survey has revealed one in ten U.S. adults rarely or never have a good night's sleep, and around 25% of American couples choose to sleep in separate beds from their partner. Interestingly, the researchers found that different generations had different reasonings for sleeping separately.According to the study, 63% of Millennials and 62% of Gen Z-ers say conflicting sleep/wake schedules are why they sleep in separate beds or rooms. But the majority of Baby Boomers said snoring was their deciding factor. And 54% of Millennials stated sleep disorders caused them to sleep separately, compared to about 20% of Baby Boomers. While tradition says partners should sleep snuggled together in the same bed, experts agree that choice might not be the most beneficial when it comes to sleep quality—which can in turn affect the relationship. “Sleep is necessary for everyone, so if sharing a bed with your partner inhibits you from getting a restful sleep, then separate beds might be a solution,” Carolyn Rubenstein, PhD, licensed psychologist, tells Lifehacker. And many couples that opt for separate sleeping arrangements actually credit the split for saving their relationship.

FYI:

For many couples, sleeping apart can actually have benefits for both your health and love life.

The Earthquake Search Intensifies

Rescue Teams Fight Weather and aftershocks as Toll Surpasses 7,700 Dead

Rescuers are racing to pull survivors from earthquake rubble before they succumb to cold weather in southern Turkey and war-ravaged northern Syria. As the death toll climbed, despair and anger were growing over the pace of rescue efforts. On Tuesday, at least 7,700 people were reported dead, officials said. The stories are horrific. Workers digging through a collapsed building in a northwest Syrian town discovered a crying infant whose mother appears to have given birth to her while buried underneath the rubble. But crews found reason for hope, rescuing more than 8,000 people in Turkey alone. But they were also working against time as temperatures sank below freezing. The Turkish navy sent ships with heavy machinery, blankets, generators and food, and the national emergency management agency dispatched more than 16,000 workers, 3,000 machines and 600 cranes to heave debris in rural towns and villages where roads buckled so badly they could not be used. Meanwhile, getting aid to Syria has been slowed by sanctions and divisions wrought by war.

Key Takeaways From the State of the Union

Biden boasts about his wins and lays out populist 2024 themes

Did you watch the State of the Union last night? Yeah, me neither. Thankfully, we can just get the highlights this morning. Apparently, it was a tense address punctuated by subtle jabs at the GOP by President Biden and raucous disruptions by Republican lawmakers. It underscores the rocky relationship between the president and Republican lawmakers as Washington kicks off two years of divided control and stares down potential crises on the debt ceiling and government funding. Biden encouraged Congress to work with him to “finish the job” of rebuilding the economy and uniting the nation.Biden hasn't formally announced his bid for re-election, but it's widely expected, and some in the audience saw the speech as something of a soft launch. He aimed to prove to a skeptical nation that his stewardship has delivered results both at home and abroad. He highlighted record job creation during his tenure as the country has emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic, and pointed to areas of bipartisan progress in his first two years in office, including on states' vital infrastructure projects and high-tech manufacturing. “And folks, we're just getting started,” he said. “There's more to do.”

Fighting words:

During the speech, Republicans heckled Biden after he swiped at their Social Security positions.

Hong Kong Lures Tourists Back

They're giving away over 500,000 free flights

Has Hong Kong always been on your bucket list? Now might be the perfect time to finally make plans to visit, as The Hong Kong Department of Tourism is set to give away over half a million free flight tickets in a bid to draw more tourists.City leader John Lee revealed the “Hello Hong Kong” tourism campaign Thursday and announced it would include the flight ticket giveaway. The city is hoping to “reverse four years of plummeting tourism numbers and to revive the economy,” the Washington Post reports. Most tickets will be distributed through Hong Kong-based carrier Cathay Pacific for travelers in Asia (including Chinese tourists, who are finally traveling again following the easing of border controls). But there will be an allocation for Europeans and Americans, too. Round-trip tickets will be distributed in phases starting from Wednesday, March 1st, beginning with Southeast Asian trips. Travelers on the Chinese mainland will get their chance in April before things open up to other medium- and long-haul destinations in May.

FYI:

Hong Kong is officially a city and special administrative region of China, governed under the principle of “One country, two systems.”
