Today’s Big Story

That Debate Got Pretty Ugly

When you go to Vegas, you expect to see a fight

Democratic debate

The ninth Democratic presidential debate took a contentious turn in Las Vegas ahead of the Nevada caucuses this weekend. The night definitely proved one thing: These candidates who have been running for president for the better part of a year have become desperate. It seems the combination of Bloomberg onstage and Bernie's breakaway put everyone on edge.

Bloomberg was targeted by his fellow candidates about his past comments on women, lawsuits facing his company, comments about real estate red-lining and his 'stop and frisk' policies. He didn't offer forceful responses, and in some cases left things more muddled and opened himself to future attacks, reports the Wall Street Journal.

Buttigieg and Klobuchar tussled over experience, their records and what prepares someone to be president, according to the New York Times. Meanwhile, Warren criticized Buttigieg for taking money from big donors and changing his positions. "It makes it unclear what it is he stands for, other than his own ambition."

Known as the candidate with a plan for seemingly everything, Warren challenged everyone, often covering policy specifics in her answers. She discussed her own health care plan, while pointing to what she deemed to be lackluster offerings from her opponents. Then she went after Klobuchar and Biden for being too eager to work with Republicans.

Bloomberg got a bit more comfortable during the second hour, according to NBC News, discussing policies around climate change, the tax code and small businesses. He took shots at Sanders in particular, comparing his policies to "communism," which Sanders called a "cheap shot."

If Democratic voters just wanted to know who could fight President Trump, this bare knuckle debate was a slight preview of who's willing to brawl.

Will the Kids Be Alright?

US ranks lower than 38 other countries when it comes to children’s wellbeing

The United States ranks 39th among countries when it comes to children's health, education and nutrition, according to a new (and disturbing) report. What's more, every country in the world has levels of excess carbon emissions that will prevent younger generations from a healthy and sustainable future, reports CNN.

The report, published in the medical journal The Lancet this week, ranked 180 countries based on a "child flourishing index." It was produced by more than 40 child and adolescent health experts from around the world, commissioned by the World Health Organization and UNICEF.

According to the World Health Organization, the report shows that "the health and future of every child and adolescent worldwide is under immediate threat from ecological degradation and exploitative marketing practices that push heavily processed fast food, sugary drinks, alcohol and tobacco at children." On the bright side, it seems like we can only go up from here.

US Economy Will Dodge Coronavirus Fallout

It could’ve been so much worse

The impact of the coronavirus outbreak in China on U.S. economic growth will be negligible and short-lived, according to economists in a Reuters poll.

The outbreak has also significantly increased the chance Beijing doesn’t comply with all of the terms of the January trade agreement signed with Washington, potentially reigniting a damaging trade war between the world’s two largest economies.

According to MarketWatch, most top American companies will suffer to some degree. Apple's production (and financial projections) have slowed. Under Armour expects to lose about $50 million in sales and Nike has closed about half of its stores in China, while the remaining ones are reporting lower-than-expected retail traffic.

Still, medians from the February 10-19 Reuters poll of over 100 economic forecasters concludes that the overall US economic growth outlook for the year remains unchanged compared with last month.

FYI: Despite the hit, the likelihood of a US recession in the coming year only edged up to a median 23% from 20% in January.

Pop Smoke Killed in a Home Invasion

The 20-year-old musician was shot in his Hollywood Hills home

Rapper Pop Smoke was shot and killed in what The Hollywood Reporter reports was a home invasion robbery. The 20-year-old rapper was murdered in his Hollywood Hills home early Wednesday.

According to law enforcement sources, there was a gathering at the house before four men in masks broke in, fired multiple shots and fled on foot. Pop Smoke, whose real name is Bashar Jackson, was rushed to the hospital by ambulance where he was reportedly pronounced dead.

The Brooklyn-raised rapper, whose mix tape just hit #7 on the Billboard 200 chart Tuesday, was confirmed dead by the label, Republic Records. He was just 20—at the beginning of a very promising career, according to HighSnobiety.

This Could Save Your Relationship

Share your bed ... not your blanket

If you sleep with a blanket hog (or have been accused of stealing the covers), you know that it's something that seems small but has big consequences. Just ask Christine Hansen, a sleep expert who coaches CEOs and elite athletes on better sleep habits.

She says that while we're asleep, our brains are still processing a lot of what our bodies are experiencing. So if your partner is moving around or pulls the covers off your body and you get cold, all that information is processed by your brain, robbing you of quality sleep.

That's why we looked into the Scandinavian solution of separate blankets. If you've ever been to a hotel in Iceland or Sweden, you've likely encountered two duvets on the bed. Typically, they're folded in half and laid side-by-side. It's a system that clearly works. After all, Scandinavians continue to report higher rates of happiness than Americans. Might it have something to do with the quality of their sleep?

We also offered up a few suggestions on the best blankets to buy—since I'm guessing you're now in the market for a couple of new ones.
