Chiefs Win Super Bowl
All in All, that was a pretty good Super Bowl Sunday, right?
I only caught bits and pieces, in between nachos and wings ... and I'm not a big football guy, but that was a pretty good game for the Big Game, right? The Kansas City Chiefs are world champs yet again, beating the Eagles, 38-35, on Sunday night in the third-highest scoring Super Bowl ever. The Chiefs didn't lead the entire game until the 4th quarter. In fact, Philadelphia took a 10-point lead into the locker room thanks to Jalen Hurts—as the MVP runner-up rushed for two scores and threw for another just in the first half. Then came Rihanna's long-awaited return to the stage. Rolling Stone said her “DGAF energy was off the charts.” There were no surprise cameos, no costume changes. Just Bad Girl RiRi on her flying stage, exuding the calm coolness she's known for. Just the way she began with “Bitch Better Have My Money” was a statement in itself. Oh, and she slyly announced she's pregnant, setting Twitter on fire. After that, I wasn't really interested in watching the rest of the game but then it was Patrick Mahomes' turn to prove why he was the MVP. And he didn't disappoint—engineering a near-perfect second half by scoring on all four drives and helping set up the game-winning field goal with just eight seconds left. That earned the Chiefs quarterback his second Super Bowl MVP. Which wasn't guaranteed after he limped off the field in the second quarter, wincing as he sat on the bench. But now Mahomes is the first player in NFL history with multiple championships and multiple MVPs in his first six seasons. And it has ESPN asking, if he's now on a Tom Brady-like trajectory.
Did You Notice?
Last year, it was dubbed the “Crypto Bowl,”due to all the cryptocurrency exchanges running expensive ads during the game. This year? Not a single crypto commercial aired.
We Shot Down Some UFOs
U.S. (and Canadian) AIrspace saw a lot of action over the weekend
In case you missed the alerts over the weekend, the U.S. has now shot down three unidentified high-altitude objects in as many days—a week after downing an alleged Chinese spy balloon after it traveled across the country. One object was shot down over Alaska on Friday, then another over Canada on Saturday, and yet another over Michigan on Sunday. It's not yet clear if these objects were in any way linked to China. Even stranger? The NORAD commander told NBC News he wasn't “able to categorize how they stay aloft.” And with U.S. fighter jets now blowing unidentified odd-shaped objects out of the sky every day, it's no surprise that many on social media are openly wondering whether or not America has just started some interstellar war. But the White House is insisting these airborne trespassers are terrestrial in origin.A U.S. official told Reuters that there was “no indication of aliens or extraterrestrial activity with these recent take downs.” But then on Sunday night, U.S. Air Force General Glen VanHerck told reporters that, regarding the possible E.T. threat, “I'll let the intel community and the counterintelligence community figure that out. I haven't ruled out anything.” According to the Washington Post, the incursions in the past week have changed how analysts receive and interpret information from radars and sensors. So we got that going for us while we wait for more UFOs.

Earthquake Deaths Now Top 33,000
experts say poor construction most likely exacerbated the scale of the destruction
Turkish authorities have launched an investigation into contractors allegedly linked to deadly building collapses that occurred after a massive earthquake and aftershocks struck last Monday. Thousands of buildings have collapsed across the region—with the sheer scale of the destruction and freezing temperatures hampering rescue efforts even as the total death toll surpassed 33,000 on Sunday.Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag told reporters Sunday that 134 people were being investigated for their roles in constructing buildings that were unable to withstand the quakes. The New York Times spoke with residents, who pointed to shoddy workmanship in a newly built luxury building of 14 floors—with some 90 apartments—that had collapsed on itself. “The concrete is like sand,” said one man. “It was built too quickly.”While Turkey's construction codes do meet current earthquake-engineering standards, the Associated Press reports that they are rarely enforced, helping explain why so many buildings collapsed. And authorities arrested two contractors believed to be responsible for the collapse of several buildings in the city of Adiyaman at Istanbul airport on Sunday trying to flee the country with bags of cash.

Could It Be Easier to Find Pappy?
Increased production could finally bring prices down, but it's going to take time
When some Oregon officials were accused last week of abusing their power to hoard bottles of Pappy Van Winkle bourbon, it was only the latest story of extreme measures people have taken to try and obtain the fabled, and rare, Kentucky whiskey.Named for legendary distiller Julian Van Winkle and distilled by Buffalo Trace in conjunction with the Van Winkle family, Pappy is “the world's most elusive bourbon,” according to Forbes. The desire has to do with its scarcity. The brand has a problem any alcohol manufacturer would kill to have: It generates an incredible amount of hype as people clamor to find (and pay top dollar) for bottles. And as Gear Patrol points out, it just so happens that many of the hardest bottles to track down come out of the Buffalo Trace Distillery—with bourbons such as Weller, Blanton's and, of course, anything from Pappy all reaching near-mythic status. But that could soon change, as Buffalo Trace is set to literally double production of its whiskeys. But ... it's still going to take a while before the ramped-up production levels make a difference in the amount of Pappy on the shelf, due to the long periods of time it takes to age.
FYI:
One New York bar was selling shots of Pappy Van Winkle for $315 each.
