✔️ Social Omnivores on the Rise
Monday, January 9th Edition

I currently do Meatless Monday each week, but I'm not sure I'm ready to give up any more than that.
Today’s Big Story
Social Omnivores on the Rise
They’re Vegetarian, But Only When They’re Home
How often do you eat meat? As more people look to limit their meat consumption, “social omnivores” are on the rise. These are people who eat vegetarian at home, but enjoy meat dishes while out at dinner, with friends, or on vacation. Most people emphasize the extremes when they talk about eating meat; either they do it or they don't. But there's a growing number of people who are seeking a middle ground. I can definitely appreciate that, but it's different from following vague flexitarian or reducetarian principles, which both eschew clear-cut rules in favor of generally prioritizing plants over animals. Social omnivores, on the other hand, have one very clear boundary: They strictly don't buy or cook meat at home. If Dry January is too much of a stretch (I personally broke my streak last night, eight days in), then perhaps “Veganuary” is more attainable. The plan—you guessed it—involves eating a vegan diet free of meat, eggs and dairy for the first month of the year. And it's been gaining traction as well. In 2022, there were around 630,000 participants in 228 countries, and the number is poised to grow this year.Of course, removing meat from your grocery list can be intimidating even for the most ambitious newcomer. Whether you have resolved to completely cut out animal products or simply want to cook more plant-based meals, Forbes spoke with both dietitians and nutritionists for advice on how to stick with a new meal plan. The good news, is that it includes plenty of pizza and pasta in addition to getting creative with new cuisines and techniques to challenge your brain (and stomach).

McCarthy Finally Made Speaker
the California Republican won the gavel but set up a showdown over government spending
After more than four days, 15 ballots, and one near-fistfight on the floor of the House of Representatives, McCarthy was finally elected Speaker of the House in the early hours of Saturday morning.McCarthy for weeks has been making concessions to win over his most hard-lined conservative colleagues. And as Intelligencer points out, he's not only left with a slim majority and limits of a divided Congress, but “at the mercy of a rump of extra-demanding right-wingers with no qualms about constraining his power.”The messiness foreshadows a 118th Congress that may be stymied by gridlock and infighting. His term is expected to last two years, but one of the concessions he negotiated to secure the job makes it relatively easy for even one member of the House to call for a vote to replace him. And he must also know that history has not been kind to speakers who needed more than one ballot to grasp the big gavel.

The House is set to vote today on the House rules package and some Republican lawmakers have already signaled their intention to oppose it.
The American higher-education system appears broken for all but the most well-off. This is why some students are skipping college—they simply don’t want to take on debt.”

The Best of CES
The best and boldest tech to come out of Las Vegas
After a two year lull, the world's biggest tech companies descended on Las Vegas once again for the Consumer Electronics Show. It wrapped up over the weekend but plenty of people were talking about the crazy futuristic goods that were shown.Of course, there were the splashy cars—from a $800,000 flying car (that could roll out shockingly soon) to BMW's color-changing car that utilizes E Ink technology in order to turn into 32 different colors at the touch of a button. But what about getting on-the-spot health data at home, just by going number one? A new sensor that hangs on your toilet promises just that. It's shaping up to be a banner year for laptops, according to Underscored. They said the dual-screen YogaBook 9i stood out from the competition by delivering a design that's equal parts innovative and practical. Double must be in. PC Mag sang the praises of Lenovo's ThinkBook Plus Twist, a business laptop with an OLED display, and a second 12-inch color E Ink display on the reverse lid.

The Electric Ram Revs Up the Brand
Come for the suicide doors and third-row jump seats. Stay for the robots.
We've officially hit peak electric pick-up. Ford is selling the F-150 Lightning. Chevy launched the Silverado EV. And Ram has just unveiled its new electric pickup, in concept form, the Ram 1500 Revolution BEV Concept (Ram REV BEV?).Ram says it's a “visionary road map” for a new truck that will “redefine the pickup segment.” And they might be right. Gear Patrol says it's unlike any truck you've ever seen. The doors are rear-hinged suicide doors; there is no B-pillar between the front and rear doors. It also has third-row jump seats that are mounted to the mid-gate.Other tech highlights include Shadow Mode, during which the truck can follow the owners movements while outside the vehicle. Ram also says it will be equipped with Level 3 autonomous features (the steering wheel will even fold away when initiated). Plus, they're planning a range-extender—essentially a generator that can recharge the truck's battery pack, which might alleviate concerns some have about driving range.
FYI:
A handful of states are driving nearly all of America's electric car adoption.

Make Yourself More Likable
How to make your life significantly easier
It’s an undeniable and unavoidable truth: Being the guy everyone likes and appreciates will no doubt make your life significantly easier. Now this doesn't mean that you sacrifice your beliefs or sanity to get along with absolutely everyone. But it does, however, mean you should incorporate a few habits that will make you not only able to connect with others, but to be seen as trustworthy and dependable. After all, likability is not some innate, unteachable trait that belongs only to a lucky few—the good looking, the fiercely social, and the incredibly talented. It's a skill that you can develop and hone over time. But our likability, as Psychology Today points out, is not entirely up to us. “It depends on the context, our roles and functions within the group, the people around us, how much we have in common with them, their biases and our own, and a variety of other factors.” Which is to say, we can't appeal to everyone all of the time. But there are certainly things we can do to make ourselves undeniably more likable.

What We’re Buying
grassy vetiver, rich cognac and leather Candle
If you've ever been in a Sid Mashburn shop, you know the feeling. It's classy yet cool, and it's a place where you definitely want to hang out. Now, you can bring a little bit of that vibe into your place since the brand just launched a line of candles. There's three scents available, but No. 150 is definitely my favorite ($75). Housed in Mashburn-green glass, it's got notes of grassy vetiver, rich cognac and leather.
