Today’s Big Story

What People at CES Are Talking About

The wildest and most-noteworthy products from the world’s largest technology conference

Samsung Sero TV

For one week a year, thousands of people gather in Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show. They come to ponder some of life’s big questions: Can robots make us feel less lonely? Have we invented enough devices to replace walking yet? How can my TV get bigger, thinner and smarter? And while it’s no longer where the most influential tech products launch—the giants like Apple and Google have their own events—there's still plenty to watch for. Here are some of the standouts you should know about ...

↦ Samsung's BB-8-like personal assistant Ballie, which follows you around at home. The grapefruit-sized ball has built-in artificial intelligence capabilities, a camera and a mobile interface that intend to help you around the house.

↦ Another Samsung item that was called everything from genius to crazy? The Sero rotating television (shown above), which flips between traditional horizontal TV and a new vertical TV. Why? Because more and more people are beaming social media from their smartphones to their televisions.

↦ Impossible Foods debuted its latest lab-created meat invention, a pig-free pork. And the taste-testers at CNET say it's scary similar to the real thing. It's even designed for kosher and halal certification.

↦ This gorgeous connected rowing machine. Yes, the Ergatta Digital Rower has a 17.3-inch screen, but don't compare it to Peloton, says Engadget. Instead of group classes, you see workouts dressed up as games.

↦ Segway's self-balancing S-Pod chair got some WALL-E comparisons, and rightly so. The Washington Post called it a cross between a scooter and a giant egg, and driving it felt more like a La-Z-Boy go kart than futuristic wheelchair.

How Big Is It?  The convention spans over 2.9 million square feet.

Iran Fires Missiles at Two US Bases in Iraq

The retaliation was expected by American forces

Iran fired more than a dozen ballistic missiles at two military bases in Iraq where American troops are stationed, the Pentagon said late Tuesday.

A military official told CNN that they did have enough early warning of the missile attack to sound the alarm so people in harm's way were able to get to bunkers in time.

Officials said the attacks were the start of a promised retaliation for the killing of a top Revolutionary Guards commander. Afterwards, Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted in the early hours of Wednesday morning that Iran did not "seek escalation or war."

President Trump followed up with a tweet, saying that he'd make a statement this morning and that an early assessment of the attacks suggest damages and casualties sustained by American forces were minimal.

Australian Fires: Over 1 Billion Animals Feared Dead

And experts say the environment will suffer for years to come

Last week, an ecologist at the University of Sydney estimated that nearly half a billion animals had been wiped out since Australia's devastating wildfires started spreading in September. Now, he says that number has soared to over 800 million in New South Wales and over 1 billion nationally, reports CBS News.

Fires are nothing new in Australia, but they have been growing more intense and becoming more destructive in recent years, a problem that has been exacerbated by climate change. And animals have been on the front lines—Australia has the highest rate of species loss of any area in the world, and researchers fear that rate could increase as the fire disaster continues.

And the animals' recovery depends not only on their population size, but also on the condition of their habitat, according to CNN. But rescue groups on the ground are doing their best to respond to the fire crisis and salvage habitats while local residents and volunteers pitch in to help care for injured animals.

What “Dry January” Does to Your Body

This almost makes me want to try it. Almost ...

“Dry January” has arrived and with it, a wide range of people swearing off alcoholic beverages for the first month of the new year. After indulging over the holidays and likely drinking too much on New Year's Eve, it makes for the perfect time to reset and give your body a break.

I kind of rolled my eyes at this before, but after we reported this story out, the benefits seem worth a month-long booze break. Even though, for me, that seems hard. Really hard.

And since it's still the first full week in January, you've got time to give it a try. And if I haven't sold you yet, how about clearer skin and better sleep? How about a slimmer waist and a fatter wallet?

The Least Exciting Super Bowl Ads?

Trump and Bloomberg will drop a whopping $20 million on game day campaign commercials

Two billionaire businessmen running for president will battle it out for political supremacy during the Super Bowl on February 2nd, reports CNBC.

President Trump’s re-election campaign is investing $10 million in a spot that will air during the big game. What we don't know is whether Trump’s ad will be for a full 60-seconds or two 30-second spots combined.

Word that the president is moving forward with a commercial came on Tuesday afternoon—the same day that former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg's campaign announced its TV buy.

While Bloomberg has spent more than $145 million on a slew of targeted TV ads, this showdown will be aired in front of an audience that typically hovers around 100 million viewers.

Think Piece: The Atlantic has a somewhat scary piece on how bots are destroying political discourse as we know it.
