Today’s Big Story

Welcome to the Q&A Phase

Both sides press their impeachment case as GOP leaders work to block more testimony

Impeachment trial

A new phase of President Trump’s impeachment trial began Wednesday, with senators posing questions to the House managers and the president’s attorneys about Trump’s conduct toward Ukraine.

According to the Washington Post, a key moment came when defense lawyer Alan Dershowitz brought out some very lawyer-is logic by suggesting that a president acting in the public’s interest can’t be impeached. He then argued that a president may believe his own reelection is in the country’s best interest.

Meanwhile, debate continues outside the chamber over whether to call witnesses, including former national security adviser John Bolton. The White House and Senate Republicans worked aggressively on Wednesday to discount damaging revelations from Bolton and line up the votes to block new witnesses from testifying, reports the New York Times.

But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told confidants that Republicans currently don't have the votes necessary to block witnesses.

On Capitol Hill, Trump’s aides circulated a letter informing Bolton that the White House was moving to block publication of his forthcoming book, because they believed it contained classified information.

However, Bolton's attorney has pushed back, saying "We do not believe that any of that information could reasonably be considered classified."

Dig Deeper:  Here are six takeaways from senators’ questions to impeachment lawyers.

Brexit Is Here

And it will weaken the European Union’s momentum and diplomatic weight

The European Parliament voted in Brussels on Wednesday to ratify the agreement that governs Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union, which will formally happen on Friday at midnight Brussels time.

The United Kingdom will become the first country to leave the EU, after 47 years of membership, reports NBC News.

Though the deal on Britain's divorce terms has cleared its hurdles, there are still huge uncertainties around the future relationship. After Britain's departure on Friday, a so-called transition period will begin during which the UK will remain within the EU's economic arrangements until the end of the year ... though it won't have a say in policy as it will not be an official member anymore.

Next Steps: What will change after Friday, 31 January? The BBC has the answers.

There Are 117 New Emojis Coming Soon

2020’s upcoming designs are both inclusive and unexpected

The Unicode Consortium has just revealed 117 new emoji that will be rolled out later this year as part of Emoji 13.0, reports The Verge.

There are 62 new emoji and 55 new gender and skin tone variants of current emoji, including more gender-inclusive options. Food lovers will be happy to see new symbols of blueberries, an olive, a bell pepper, flatbread, tamales, bubble tea, a teapot and even fondue.

Others seem less necessary, but I think will be fun to troll my friends with. Like the smiling face with a tear or the inexplicably Italian hand gesture.

What? One of the new emojis, a protest-ish sign, has people confused as to what's written on the sign.

Optimize Your Breath

It’s probably the simplest way to be healthier almost instantly

Take a big deep breath. No, seriously, do it. Feels good, right? But it could probably feel better. And do more for your body and mind.

If when you take that deep inhale, you feel your shoulders and chest rise up, you're breathing "vertically." And, you really don't want to do that. But you're not alone. Most of us take short, vertical breaths because anxiety and stress pulls tension up into our shoulders.

But you can harness your breath and use it to reduce stress, increase productivity and balancing your health. "Our breathing is the only system in the body that is both completely automatic and also under our control—that's not an accident of nature or a coincidence," says Dan Brulé, author of Just Breathe. "Breathing is the link between body and mind—it's a tool." And he says we should use it as one.

For today's installment of "31 Days," we offer up four different breathing exercises that may feel a bit strange at first, but will have you feeling superhuman in no time.

A Sweet Surprise for an Air Force Veteran

His unworn Rolex is now worth $700,000

When an "Antiques Roadshow" guest purchased a Rolex in the mid-'70s, he paid about $345. Learning how much it's worth today made him literally topple over and let a well-timed expletive fly.

But I'd have done the same. And you probably would've too.

The Air Force vet, identified only as David, brought in a Rolex Daytona Cosmograph, which he purchased via the base exchange for about a month's pay, while stationed overseas.

He never wore it (crazy, I know!) and had no idea just how valuable that a pristine, box-fresh vintage Daytona would be worth today. Because this particular model is extremely, extremely rare, it'd sell for $500,000 to $700,000. Even the original documents are expensive. Appraiser Peter Planes said those papers, which were left blank, were probably worth about an additional $2,000.

Watch It: The video of his discovery is just a delight to watch.
