Today’s Big Story

Historic, Not Surprising

Donald Trump is the third US president to be impeached and face a trial in the Senate

US House of Representatives

After 11 hours of fierce debate and impassioned speeches from both Democrats and Republicans, the House of Representatives voted almost entirely along party lines to impeach the president on both charges that he abused his office and obstructed Congress.

Impeachment sets the stage for a historic trial beginning early next year in the Senate, which will have final say—10 months before Trump faces re-election—on whether to acquit the 45th president or convict and remove him from office, reports the New York Times.

A two-thirds vote in the Senate would be required to remove the president from office. According to the Wall Street Journal, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell sees no scenarios in which Trump would be convicted.

Far from showing remorse or contemplating resignation, as Nixon did in the face of impeachment, Trump instead has raged on Twitter and is calling the impeachment proceedings a "political suicide march" at a rally last night.

But David Graham of the New Yorker rightly called this a stain that will forever alter Trump’s legacy. "No president has ever understood the power and mystique of brand as keenly as Donald Trump, which means he is acutely able to grasp the blow to his reputation."

What Is a Snow Squall?

The National Weather Service only began issuing the warnings last year

Millions of East Coast residents received a "snow squall warning" mobile alert Wednesday afternoon. But before the rush of snow hit, many confused people stared at their phones wondering what the unusual weather term means.

Snow squalls are a relatively new concept—they were given a name only in November 2018, when the National Weather Service (NWS) declared that it would begin issuing the alerts. They are best described as sudden, moderately heavy snowfalls that blow snow and strong surface winds, reports NBC News.

While short, they should be taken seriously. The NWS states that warnings are much like a tornado or severe thunderstorm warning, and can cause low visibility—making for dangerous travel conditions and accidents.

FYI: Meteorologists recommend staying inside during a squall and avoiding driving, as the storms heavily affect the roads and cause crashes.

Night Mode Could Mess With Your Sleep

It could screw us up more than normal mode’s dreaded blue light

It was supposed to be easier on the eyes. It was supposed to protect us from troubled sleep and help us fall asleep faster. But According to researchers from the University of Manchester, your phone's "yellow-tinted" night mode might be screwing up your sleeping pattern more than the blue light-tinted normal mode that it was at least in part attempting to remedy.

Researchers found that your body's internal clock associates dimmer, cooler-colored lights with twilight to decide when it's finally time to fall asleep. Conversely it does the opposite with brighter colors, reports Complex.

According to the study, brightness levels are more important than color when it comes to stimulating the body clock. However, when the light is equally dim, blue is more relaxing than yellow.

More research is likely required (as it usually is in these early cases), but it brings up a good point: If your phone is telling you to switch to night mode, it is time to put down your phone.

How To: Kick yourself off your smartphone at bedtime.

Is Streetwear Ending?

Virgil Abloh says, “it’s definitely gonna die”

In a new interview with Dazed, Off-White and Louis Vuitton designer Virgil Abloh was asked what he thinks streetwear will look like in the next decade. Surprisingly, he doesn’t think the style will last. "I would definitely say it’s gonna die," he said. "Its time will be up ... how many more T-shirts can we own, how many more hoodies, how many sneakers?"

As for what will replace it, Abloh believes consumers with personal style and a deep knowledge of fashion will turn to vintage items. "There are so many clothes that are cool that are in vintage shops and it’s just about wearing them. I think that fashion is gonna go away from buying a boxfresh something; it’ll be like, hey I’m gonna go into my archive."

Turning away from the latest drops? They're big words from a man who essentially provided the proof that streetwear deserved respect. Of course, Twitter lit up with opinions, but our friend Jian DeLeon made an astute point, saying that streetwear will evolve, rather than die. "Like the term 'hipster' has evolved from jazz enthusiast to bearded Brooklynite to nouveau riche poser, so will the whole 'streetwear' term and those who associate with it. Early adopters will always be on the next wave."

So don't throw out your hoodies and sneakers just yet. Besides, they can eventually go into your archive, right?

Man Wakes Up ... to a Puppy in His House

How a random dog found its way into the house and into our hearts

Here's some good news as the week winds down: A Philadelphia couple woke in the middle of the night, thinking someone had broken in. What they found was a small, shivering stray dog, reports The Dodo.

It was cold, wet and the wind had somehow blown an unlocked door ajar and the pup simply walked right in.

They dried her off and discovered how underfed she was. She also had an infected paw, so they took her to the vet the next day. They found out this "puppy" was actually nine years old. But by then, they'd already fallen for the good girl and decided to adopt her.

The couple posted their new dog's origin story on social media and in less than two days, received $19,000 in donations to help pay for the senior dog's medical bills. Anything leftover will go to help other animals in need. What? I'm not crying, you're crying.
