Today’s Big Story

It’s Possible for Humans to Hibernate

Sounds pretty tempting, right?

Hibernation pods

Between everything that's happening in the world right now and the fact that I, personally, am feeling a bit under-slept these days, this news is very compelling.

The Atlantic is reporting that scientists are researching how humans could hibernate for extended periods of time, not unlike bears, bats and hedgehogs. This emerging science of adapting our bodies could change treatment of inflammatory diseases, insomnia and trauma.

Aside from the social and financial impossibility of recreationally detaching for months at a time, hibernation turns out to be less physically impossible than you'd imagine.

It all centers around body-temperature regulation. Dropping the body’s core temperature induces a low-metabolic state of "torpor," in which animals require almost no food. Most of the calories we "warm-blooded" animals burn go into maintaining our body temperatures—our basal metabolic rate.

Cooling is now widely practiced in hospitals and experimented with for deep-space travel, according to Popular Science. Some doctors have come to believe the principle could be taken further—essentially keeping people alive after they die. Pretty heavy thoughts for a Friday, huh?

FYI:  During hibernation, a bear's heart rate drops to as slow as eight beats per minute.

Senators Sworn In, Impeachment Trial Begins

House managers read charges as watchdog faults president’s hold on aid among other fallout

President Trump’s impeachment trial on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress began in the Senate with a ceremonial reading of the House-passed articles and the senators being sworn in on Thursday.

Chief Justice John Roberts took the oath to preside over the trial and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the process will proceed "in earnest" next week after the holiday.

However, fallout also continued Thursday from new allegations by Lev Parnas, a former associate of Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani, that Trump knew of his efforts to dig up dirt in Ukraine that could benefit him politically, reports the Washington Post.

Then Ukraine opened a probe into possible state surveillance of former US ambassador Marie Yovanovitch while a nonpartisan congressional watchdog group found that the administration's hold on Ukraine aid violated federal law. That was all just yesterday.

The Key to Health? It Might Be Wealth

Time to go ask for a raise

Ready for a surprising or not so surprising fact? Being wealthy adds nine years to a healthy life expectancy: a life free from disability and discomfort, according to transatlantic research first reported on by The Guardian.

The decade-long study was conducted across the UK and US, looking at all the social and economic factors behind the reasons why people sink into ill-health as they age.

Of course, there are many ways to define "wealth." In this study, researchers considered physical possessions such as a home, jewels and artworks, as well as other financial assets such as savings and investments that had been accumulated over your lifetime, minus debts.

Though education level and social class had some effect, neither was found to be nearly as significant as wealth, according to the New York Times. So up those 401(k) contributions. You'll want it later. Especially considering it was recently discovered that children born today are likely to spend a larger proportion of their lives in poor health than their grandparents' generation.

That's Rich: Here are five money rules you should break.

How to Read a Whiskey Label Like a Pro

A gentlemanly skill that will serve you well

The more you know about something, the better you can appreciate it, right? And, it seems, we’ve all got a lot of love for whiskey these days—business is booming like never before.

But the world of whiskey is a vast and often bewildering place for anyone who hasn’t spent years thoughtfully sipping the fine brown spirit or traveling to distilleries the world over.

It would take a lifetime to develop a connoisseur’s knowledge. But for a very Friday-appropriate edition of "31 Days," we're offering a handy primer as a cheat sheet of sorts to know what to look for (and what it means).

Weekend Pairing

Bad Boys For Life + a Mojito Cocktail

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence return to theaters as Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett in Bad Boys For Life. The franchise's original installment premiered 25 years ago, and was followed by a popular sequel in 2003. Now, the boys are back for "one more mission" after Lawrence's character decides he wants to retire from all the action-packed detective work. The finale focuses on a drug cartel in Miami and a new hotshot unit the partners have to work with in order to take them down.

Reviews are starting to roll in and, perhaps somewhat shockingly, they're pretty good. The film currently holds a very respectable 76% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is being praised in reviews for delivering "slam-bam fun" in a "nostalgic treat with heart." Vulture's Bilge Ebiri even said he's "not entirely opposed to the idea of a fourth Bad Boys entry. Whatcha gonna do?" I'll tell you what I'm going to do ... Down a mojito or two and then give this throwback action flick a chance.

Your Pairing:Miami loves its Cuban influences. And if this traditional Cuban highball was good enough for someone battling the heat of Havana 100 years ago, then the Mojito is good enough for me now. Esquire has a little history and an easy-to-follow recipe with a reminder to always use fresh mint. The most underrated part? The therapeutic process of making one from scratch—put a little elbow grease into that muddler.
