Today’s Big Story

Noise Pollution Is Everywhere

The sounds around us impact your life and affect your health

City noise

Are you reading this with headphones on or earbuds in your ears? I bet you are. Because it seems like we all retreat into our own personal sound bubbles these days.

Why? Because noise is practically everywhere. And it's becoming a major, under-appreciated threat to our hearing, according to the World Health Organization. In fact, one in four adults show signs of noise-induced hearing loss, and hearing loss (from all causes) is now the third most common chronic health condition in the US, just after diabetes and cancer.

Everything from the music in spinning classes to the chatter in restaurants can take a toll on our bodies, reports Vox.

In response to the annoyance of noise, we release stress hormones, our blood pressure goes up and our heart rate rises. Perhaps more shocking, our body can respond to noise—especially at night—as low as around 33 decibels, which is about as loud as a purring cat.

Studies have also shown that over long periods of time, prolonged exposure to noise can lead to a higher risk of everything from high blood pressure, heart disease and heart attacks to strokes, diabetes and depression.

Not great news for city dwellers. Especially because populations in urban areas continue to swell. And there's been a 40% increase in the number of cars on the road over the past 25 years.

FYI:  The Apple Watch's latest OS has a noise app that measures the decibel level around you and alerts you to loud situations that generally aren't good for your ears.

A Plane Dumped Jet Fuel on School Kids

At least 20 children and dozens of other people were treated for minor injuries

This was a bad situation all around. More than 60 people were exposed to jet fuel or fumes on Tuesday when a Delta flight was forced to dump fuel over a Los Angeles schoolyard and school buildings during an emergency shortly after departing LAX.

Two classes were outside in the school's playground when the liquid "rained down" just before noon, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The Boeing 777 had taken off from LAX with 149 passengers on board and was en route to Shanghai when the aircraft experienced an engine issue requiring the plane to turn around and return to the airport.

Fuel dumping is very rare and is only used in case of emergencies or if pilots have to reach a safe landing weight, as was the case in Tuesday’s incident. NBC News confirms that students and staff were being treated for skin irritation and breathing problems, but no one was taken to the hospital.

What Went Down at the Debate Last Night

Democrats clash at the last showdown before the Iowa caucuses

Did you watch the Democratic debate last night? Or are you a little tired of politics at the moment? This was the last one before the Iowa caucuses—the first major contest of the presidential primary season—kicks off next month.

The candidates clashed in starkly personal terms over who had the best chance to defeat President Trump, reports the New York Times. Prompted by the moderators, Warren and Sanders continued a debate over the subject of whether a woman could be elected president. Warren, who clocked the most speaking time on stage, pointed out that the women on stage were the only two who'd won every campaign they'd fought.

As for who didn't shine as well: Buttigieg. According to the Washington Post, it was the first time he was something of a bystander who didn’t really add much. And Biden, who "occasionally seemed to struggle for words and for some reason again cut his answers short, citing the time constraints."

In Other News: The House is set to vote today to send the articles of impeachment against President Trump to the Senate for trial.

Why Are Americans Drinking Less Wine?

Consumption decreased in 2019 for the first time in 25 years

I'm shocked, actually. It seems to me that more and more people have gotten into wine—celebrating quality makers and stocking their home bars with bottles from vineyards near and far. But the data doesn't lie.

IWSR, a leading source of data and analysis on the global alcoholic beverage market, issued a report earlier this week showing that the volume of wine consumed in the United States decreased by nearly 1% in total volume. It now represents just 11% of the alcoholic beverage market in America.

This decrease, according to the Wall Street Journal, is primarily attributed to a generational shift as millennials increasingly turn to alternatives like hard seltzers, cocktails and non-alcoholic beer.

Even baby boomers are drinking less because of lower disposable income and smaller homes, which make wine harder to store. It's all so depressing ... I'm ready for a drink. The upside? More wine for me.

FYI: Scientific studies have found that drinking red wine can help battle (or prevent) flu symptoms.

Other Things We’re Talking About Today

Opening Ceremony Is Closing Its Stores

The news comes just a day after the New Guards Group acquired the brand

Since 2002, Opening Ceremony has been providing men and women with a retail experience dedicated to emerging designers and cool brands. They were the first to stock Alexander Wang and they introduced a logo-heavy in-house line long before "merch" was cool.

But after New Guards Group, which is owned by Farfetch, announced that it had acquired the brand, Opening Ceremony released word that it will be closing all of its stores, including its New York flagship, along with its Los Angeles and Tokyo outposts.

According to The Cut, "it’s hard to see it as anything but another example of how retail is dying." And GQ's Cam Wolf puts it this way: "While Opening Ceremony was once involved in predicting and guiding fashion's future, it will now be a pawn in someone else's vision of fashion's brave new world."

New Guards Group’s secret sauce is its ability to produce high-end items at speeds on par with the Zaras and H&Ms of the world—luxury fast fashion, if you will. I guess time will tell if such a bet will pay off.
