Today’s Big Story

Coke Energy Is Coming

The question is ... do we want (or need) it?

Coca-Cola Energy

This month, Coca-Cola will start selling four varieties of its energy drink—Coca-Cola Energy, Energy Zero Sugar, Energy Cherry and Energy Cherry Zero Sugar—in the United States, reports CNN. The drink is already available in 25 international markets.

If you're not eagerly anticipating this new take on an energy drink, you're not alone. Coke's research found that American energy drink market penetration has been slow as many consumers are wary of the new drinks and the unfamiliar brands that produce them.

But what if it came in a friendly and well-known red can and tasted like Coca-Cola? Coke's version of the drink has 114 milligrams of caffeine in a 12-ounce can, about the same as a 12-ounce cup of coffee, similar to the other popular energy drinks.

Just how big is the energy drink market? According to Bloomberg, energy drinks make up a still-growing $53 billion global industry. The current top-selling energy drink in the US is the original Red Bull, with Monster trailing close behind.

And apparently, they taste pretty good too. "They taste like soda, with a lot of the herby, medicinal notes you get from Red Bull and Monster hidden by that classic cola flavor, along with noticeably more carbonation," says Gizmodo's Sam Rutherford, who drank a few cans at the CES trade show "Honestly, as far as energy drinks go, both Coke Energy and Coke Energy Cherry taste pretty good."

It’d Be an Honor Just to Be Nominated ...

People are talking more about the Oscar snubs than the actual nominees

The field for the 92nd Academy Awards is now set after the nominations were announced Monday morning. Director Todd Phillips' Joker leads the pact with 11 nominations (including Best Picture and Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix). Scarlett Johansson scored two noms and Netflix garnered a whopping 24 for their original films.

But it seemed like more people were interested in who was shut out. "It was a largely predictable slate of nominees," reports Rolling Stone. "Except where it wasn’t."

The Best Actor category left out Robert De Niro (The Irishman), Adam Sandler (Uncut Gems) and Eddie Murphy (Dolemite Is My Name). Both Lupita Nyong'o (Us) and Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers) were expected but overlooked. And while Little Women was nominated for Best Picture, its director Greta Gerwig was not honored (all five nominees are men). Cynthia Erivo—nominated for Best Actress for her portrayal as Harriet Tubman in Harriet—is the only person of color nominated for an acting Oscar.

Honorable Mention: Oscar nominee Kathy Bates consoled Adam Sandler with an epic insider wink.

Ocean Temperatures Hit a Record High

The seas absorb 90% of the heat trapped by greenhouse gases

Last year was the warmest year on record for the world’s oceans, part of a long-term warming trend, according to a study released Monday.

The Earth’s seas are the clearest measure of the climate emergency because they absorb more than 90% of the heat trapped by the greenhouse gases emitted when fossil fuels are burned, forests are destroyed and other human activities, reports the New York Times.

What's more, hotter oceans lead to more severe storms and disrupts the water cycle, meaning more floods, droughts and wildfires, as well as an unavoidable rise in sea level. And according to The Guardian, it also results in harm to marine life, coral bleaching and loss of critical ecosystems.

Why It Matters: The Guardian has an informative companion piece with everything you need to know about the significance of warmer oceans.

Improve Your Gut Health

What you need to know and what you need to do

You've likely heard a lot about gut health lately. Or maybe your "microbiome" or "gut flora" or the importance of probiotics. That's because it's now understood that the balance of microorganisms that live in our digestive tract is absolutely vital for everything from physical and mental health to overall immunity and more.

We were curious about it ourselves, so we consulted a few experts for today's installment of "31 Days." We then downed a whole lot of probiotics to learn as much about gut health as we could. The team is feeling good and more energized than ever as a result. And I'm no expert, myself, but I don't think those new Coke Energies do much for your gut.

Russian Hackers Are Back at It

They breached the Ukrainian gas company at the center of the impeachment scandal

An American cybersecurity company says Russian military agents successfully hacked the Ukrainian gas company at the center of the scandal that led to President Donald Trump’s impeachment, reports the Associated Press.

The hacking attempts against Burisma, the Ukrainian gas company on whose board Hunter Biden served, began in early November, as talk of the Bidens, Ukraine and impeachment was dominating the news in the US.

It was not clear from an eight-page report posted online by Area 1 what the hackers were looking for or may have obtained. The timing of the operation suggests, however, that the Russian agents were likely searching for material that could damage the Bidens.

The tactics are strikingly similar to what American intelligence agencies report was Russia’s hacking operation during the 2016 presidential campaign of emails from Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee.
