House to Vote Today on Impeachment
And GOP leaders are starting to break away from the president
Donald Trump is set to become the first president in US history to have been impeached twice—this time for inciting the violent riot on Capitol Hill after weeks of casting doubt on the legitimacy of the election and spreading conspiracy theories.
On Tuesday, the House of Representatives approved a symbolic resolution urging Vice President Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment against President Trump. Pence, in a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, said “I do not believe that such a course of action is in the best interest of our Nation or consistent with our Constitution.”
But several of Pence’s fellow Republicans disagree. While the vast majority of GOP members are expected to oppose the article of impeachment when the House votes today, there could be as many as 10 to even 20 or more Republicans voting to impeach.
On Tuesday, Rep. Liz Cheney (Wyo.), the third-ranking House Republican, and Rep. John Katko (N.Y.), the top Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, both publicly held Trump responsible for last Wednesday’s violence. They were later joined by Reps. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), Fred Upton (R-Mich.) and Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-Wash.) joined the Democratic effort to remove Trump, reports CNN.
And in another potentially significant blow to Trump, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has indicated that he believes Trump “committed impeachable offenses and that he is pleased that Democrats are moving to impeach him, believing that it will make it easier to purge him from the party,” reports the New York Times.
It’s the harshest pushback the president has faced from Republicans since he was a primary candidate who GOP leaders believed would fade away. As for what happens after today's vote? No one knows.

People are Talking About CES
New tech products offer a bright look at the future
Maybe it's because of all the current chaos swirling, but it seems like more people are excited about the new technology being announced at the annual Consumer Electronics Show, which this year is completely digital.
CNET was excited about the mobile technology, especially LG's Rollable phone, which uses a rolling screen that can extend upward to create a larger, more tablet-like display.
The team at Gear Patrol was more impressed by the wearables, like the simply-named Wearable Display by TCL. The streamlined headset packs two 1080p mini OLED displays creating an effective 140-inch television in what looks like a pair of sunglasses.
According to WIRED, there's a lot of smart fitness equipment coming our way—from technologically advanced masks to connected equipment geared to give Peloton a run for its money.
↦ FYI: GM surprised us with Cadillac eVTOL air taxi, which appears to be more of a personal aircraft or drone than a flying car.

CDC Expands Access to Vaccine
Officials recommend states give to anyone 65+
Operation Warp Speed recommended states expanding access to COVID-19 vaccines to everyone 65 and older, as well as any adult with an underlying health condition that might raise the risk for complications of the coronavirus.
According to NBC News, tthe guidelines are intended to prompt faster distribution of the vaccines by making more people immediately eligible for vaccination, as well as expanding the potential locations where people can receive it.
Previously, CDC officials were looking to withhold doses to ensure there was enough supply for a second round of vaccinations (since both approved vaccines require two shots). But it looks like there's plenty to go around and more is getting made an an impressive pace.
On Tuesday, the CEOs of Pfizer and BioNTech increased their vaccination production goal to 2 billion doses in 2021, up from the original 1.3 billion planned. And President-elect Joe Biden said he plans to invoke the Defense Production Act to increase the production of vaccines once he's officially in office.

Paris Is Going Green
The Champs-Élysées is being made into “an extraordinary garden”
Plans to convert the iconic Champs-Élysées avenue in Paris into a pedestrian-friendly public space have been announced by the capital's mayor Anne Hidalgo, reports Dezeen.
This will be achieved by closing off half of the avenue's eight-lane highway to traffic and introducing pockets of greenery. The aim is to improve air quality across the nearly 1.2 mile-long road and make it a more sustainable and desirable public space.
According to Afar, this pedestrian-forward redesign has been a long time coming: local business leaders first campaigned fora redesign in 2018. The first stage of the project—renovating the Place de la Concorde—is slated for completion in 2023, just ahead of Paris’s turn as host of the 2024 Summer Olympics. The aim is to transform the entire Champs-Élysées by 2030.
