Today’s Big Story
Inching Closer to a COVID Solution
Countries vow to work together while vaccinations will “hopefully” start soon
Leaders of the world’s major economies on Sunday urged strenuous efforts to cooperate in order to combat the coronavirus and revive the global economy during the G20 summit, which was held virtually because of the pandemic, reports the Wall Street Journal.
Meanwhile, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern spoke with President-elect Joe Biden on Sunday. According to Axios, Biden told her he looked forward to working closely on challenges including COVID-19—something New Zealand has been very successful at containing.
On Sunday, the U.S. reported a 12th straight day of record hospitalizations. It has registered more than 12 million confirmed cases in total and more than 256,000 Americans have died from the disease this year.
Thankfully, one of the experimental treatments that President Trump received while he was battling the coronavirus in October, made by the biotech company Regeneron, has been approved for emergency use by the Food and Drug Administration. This antibody drug promises to bring down the mortality rate for those with severe symptoms.
And vaccinations in the U.S. could start in less than three weeks, as the makers file for similar emergency use. “On the 11th or on the 12th of December, hopefully the first people will be immunized across the United States,” Moncef Slaoui, head of the government’s Operation Warp Speed, told Bloomberg. Representatives for the vaccine makers estimate there will be enough doses available to treat about 22.5 million Americans by January.
Emergency authorization would allow limited groups of Americans to get the vaccines before the typical monthslong approval process. On Sunday, the FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn tweeted, “While we can’t predict how long FDA’s review will take, the agency will review the request as expeditiously as possible, while still doing so in a thorough and science-based manner, so that we can help make available a vaccine that the American people deserve as soon as possible.” And Americans are increasingly ready to take the shot.

The Final Step in This Long Election
Certification has taken on new importance
President Donald Trump's struggle to challenge the results of the election became even tougher over the weekend. After another federal judge dismissed another lawsuit in Pennsylvania, he now faces a rapid succession of states due to certify their election results before the critical date of December 8.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Michigan's State Board of Canvassers is set to meet Monday to certify the state's election results, but there is a lot of attention on what its two GOP members will do.
The president's team is scrambling to try to head off other states from finalizing their vote tallies, filing a request late Saturday for a second recount in Georgia and attempting to invalidate thousands of votes in Wisconsin as a recount gets underway.
Electors are due to vote in state capitols on Dec. 14. But if Biden is officially declared the victor in contested states by Dec. 8, federal law says Congress will presume those results to be conclusive when it comes time to finalize who won.

Artificial Intelligence Poses New Dangers
It could be used to hack connected cars, drones warn security experts
Growing up, my mother never wanted new technology in our cars. "Just one more thing to break," she'd cautiously say. "And it's even more expensive to fix." She wasn't wrong—mothers rarely are—but who wants to go without the latest gadgetry?
Well a new report from the United Nations, Europol and cybersecurity company Trend Micro highlights the potential malicious impact of hackers on autonomous cars, drones and other burgeoning AI-powered technologies.
The report says machine learning offer "enormous benefits" to society but also pose serious threats as they become more integrated into society. Such threats could impact the physical world, like the hijacking of delivery drones that are carrying dangerous materials.
When it comes to cars, AI systems that manage autonomous vehicles and regular traffic could be manipulated by attackers if they gain access to the networks that control them. By causing traffic delays—perhaps even by using stolen credit card data to swamp an area with hire cars–cyber attackers could provide other criminals with extra time needed to carry out a robbery or other crime, while also getting away from the scene. Sounds like a good movie, right? But scary to think about it happening while you're relaxing as your Tesla drives you around.

Mike Tyson Is In Fighting Shape
No longer just a punch line, he’s ready to punch
Two of boxing's iconic figures will lock horns on Saturday, Nov. 28, as former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson meets former four-division world champion Roy Jones Jr. in a highly anticipated pay-per-view fight.
Retiring in 2005 with a 50-6 record, Tyson—who's looking jacked these days at age 53—is eager to get back in the ring, reports Man of Many.
Taking to Instagram to share previews of what to expect come Saturday, Iron Mike has revealed a shocking transformation, shedding over 100 pounds in preparation for the fight. While "ring rust" is sure to play a factor, just looking at this heavyweight behemoth gives hope to anyone looking to get in shape ... after Thanksgiving, of course.
If you're looking for a workout, T3 has assembled Tyson's old pre-fight plan: "It's what he used to get strong in his prime, and as bodyweight workouts go it is, of course, plenty brutal."

Outdoor Dining Is In Trouble
It's seemingly shutting down, coast to coast
Public health officials announced Sunday that outdoor dining at restaurants across Los Angeles County will shut down on Wednesday—after which restaurants will only be able to offer takeout meals or delivery, reports Eater.
In New York, the reality of winter during COVID-19 is a situation no one is truly prepared for. Restaurants are scrambling to retain customers even as indoor and outdoor dining seems perilously close to ending. The same thing is happening in cities like Chicago.
The building of "outdoor" covers has gradually escalated from tents and clear plastic igloos into what could only reasonably be called a buildings, or at least sheds.
The danger is that these precautions are put into place for a good reason. People gathering for meals (sitting close across a table unmakes and chatting) inevitably leads to a spread of the virus. And gathering under a covered outdoor structure without proper ventilation is as dangerous as eating indoors. Of course, who wants breezy ventilation during the winter?
↦ Meanwhile: TikTok seems to be doing a better job at predicting outbreaks than the government.
