Sure, there are a lot of people on Earth. But there are only 900 million dogs. I think we need to get that number up.

Today’s Big Story

You’re One in 8 Billion

The U.N. says we set A milestone on Tuesday, but the pace of growth is slowing down

Population

Sometime on Tuesday, the 8 billionth human on Earth was born. We don't know when exactly, but we're now living in a world with an estimated 8 billion people in it, according to a new report from the United Nations. It's the first time we've added a full billion people since 2011, when humanity reached 7 billion. After a surge during the 20th century, population growth is already slowing down. It could take another 15 years to reach nine billion and the U.N. doesn't expect it to peak (at around 10.4 billion) until the early 2080s.That's billions of people of all different ages and cultures. But there are a lot of characteristics that we share. For instance, if you are a 37-year-old man from the U.S., there are 2.3 million people just like you on Earth. And there are 114 million other 37-year-olds in the world—57.9 million of them men.As a global population, we're getting older. The median age has moved from around 20 years old in 1970 to approximately 30 today. But aging populations can also lead to stunted economic growth if elderly, non-working generations end up outnumbering the active workforce in a particular country. Of course, the world is still pretty young: 59% of the world is younger than 37.India is expected to become the single most populous country, surpassing China sometime next year. Researchers project that through 2050, future population increases will come mostly from Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, the Philippines and Tanzania. As for the United States, CBS News noted that the report said global migration “will be the sole driver of population growth in high-income countries.”Of course, having more people on Earth puts more pressure on our natural resources. But Gizmodo takes a step back and reassures us that basically every projection of a limit to Earth's human population, or assumed “ideal number”, has been wrong.

Trump Launches a 2024 Campaign

Despite investigations and concerns that he was to blame for the GOP's weak midterm showing

As promised, Donald Trump kicked off an unprecedented comeback bid by declaring his 2024 campaign for president at his Mar-a-Lago resort on Tuesday night. In doing so, he ignored the appeals of Republicans who warn that his outsized influence on the party is largely to blame for its weaker-than-expected showing in the midterm elections.A defeated former president running for election again while facing potential criminal indictment is unprecedented in U.S. history. Trump becomes the first former president to run again since Teddy Roosevelt, and the first since Grover Cleveland to run after losing reelection. He is the only president to be impeached twice, and the only one impeached by a bipartisan vote. But his third presidential run won't be easy. Potential rivals are already openly plotting to challenge Trump for the nomination. And if his plan was that a candidacy would protect him from potential indictment in any of the several ongoing criminal investigations into his conduct, he may be disappointed. The Washington Post reports that a presidential bid won't stop the Department of Justice. Plenty of political candidates have been investigated while they ran for office—just ask Hillary Clinton.

Quoted:

In an interview, former Vice President Mike Pence suggested that he would not be supporting Trump's campaign. “I think we'll have better choices.”

If you start copying people, you can only be as good as them … you cannot be better.”

Trouble buying Tickets for Taylor Swift reignite fan frustrations over Ticketmaster

Ticketmaster's homepage was knocked offline Tuesday as fans flooded the site to get tickets for Taylor Swift's “Eras” tour. Even if you weren't trying to score tickets, I'm sure you saw the drama on social media. And that includes lawmakers who were calling for the breakup of the Ticketmaster-LiveNation monopoly. The problems stem from a Ticketmaster system called Verified Fan. It was implemented to prevent scalper bots from buying up tickets and reselling them. As Swift and other artists like Bruce Springsteen, Paramore, and Blink-182 plan tours, the limited number of Verified Fan tickets has resulted in soaring prices and rising anxiety since a lot of fans are not able to get verified. This chaos surrounding ticket sales, while frustrating, is also not uncommon. Whenever a major artist announces a tour, fans inevitably complain about the being process along with fees and unchecked scalping. According to NBC News, Ticketmaster's leverage means it's able to charge high fees—in some instances as much as 78% of the face value of the ticket itself.

Louis Vuitton Is Opening a Hotel

And it will be located inside the brand's sprawling headquarters in paris

Louis Vuitton will not be put in a box—or a monogrammed trunk, for that matter. Over the past 160 years, the French label has expanded beyond luggage into fashion and accessories, then into pop-up restaurants and interactive exhibitions. Soon, it will be opening a hotel.Women's Wear Daily reports that the brand's 400,000-square-foot headquarters—located in the first arrondissement in Paris—will soon be turned into a giant complex featuring the world's first Louis Vuitton hotel along with the world's largest LV boutique. With spectacular views stretching from the Eiffel Tower to the Notre-Dame cathedral, the storied Vuitton building should make for a pretty stunning hotel experience. According to Robb Report, the move reflects the growing demand for high-end experiences in addition to top-tier products. “That's what our clients want from us,” Burke told WWD. “They want a 24/7 relationship.”

FYI:

Starting December 12, the building will play host to LV Dream, an experiential installation exhibiting Louis Vuitton's long list of artist collaborations.
