Stalling the Inevitable

Without a realistic way to overturn the results of the election, Trump keeps swinging

The longer this goes on, the more you have to ask yourself: how crazy will it get? Will things get worse or is it going to fizzle out as state races are certified?

Despite the clear math showing that Joe Biden has won the election, President Donald Trump is hanging on, insisting that he won a second term. He hasn’t answered any questions from the media—or call into Fox & Friends—since last week. He hasn’t appeared in public except for Wednesday morning’s Veterans Day ceremony.

But he’s still spreading unsubstantiated claims of rampant voter fraud via social media. And the easily debunked conspiracy theories spread quickly. According to The Guardian, 16 of the top 20 public Facebook posts that include the word “election” feature false or misleading information casting doubt on the election in favor of Trump.

And while fact-checkers are working overtime, the Trump campaign is directing lawyers to keep on fighting to try to overturn the results in several states—including in a new 105-page federal-court filing (PDF) in Pennsylvania—despite earlier lawsuits being dismissed for lack of evidence. According to The Atlantic, legal maneuvers are “unlikely to pay off in the form of a second term; Trump would need the equivalent of three consecutive Hail Mary passes to stay in office.”

There will be recounts. Trump’s campaign manager said last week that they’ll seek a recount in Wisconsin. And Georgia announced Wednesday that the state’s planned audit will trigger a “full by-hand recount in each county” of the presidential race due to the small margin. Neither of which are expected to change the outcome of the election.

And we’re not the only ones waiting. President-elect Biden still hasn’t been provided access to presidential daily intelligence briefings—one of the first rights of a presidential candidate after winning the election. However, Oklahoma Republican Senator James Lankford (who sits on the Senate Oversight Committee) said if no progress is made on the issue by Friday, he’ll step in to make sure it happens. Could it be? Bipartisanship? Let the healing begin.

Dig Deeper: NBC News examines the dizzying array of false claims and conspiracy theories dominating social and ultra-conservative media since the morning after Election Day.

Here's How We Voted

The big demographic shifts in the 2020 election

Nearly two weeks after Election Day, the shape of the expanded electorate is coming into focus. And despite a massive surge in turnout, many demographic and political groups voted in similar ways. But there were some important moves.

After 2016, Democrats worried whether they could appeal to enough white working-class Trump voters to win in 2020 without alienating and disrespecting a key Democratic constituency: voters of color. According to Harvard Business Review, they just did.

Biden won because he won back Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. A large Latinx turnout played an outsized role in both Arizona and Nevada. While Black voters played a central role in Georgia, thanks to the voter-turnout efforts led by Stacey Abrams.

While voter turnout rose sharply in battleground states across the country, the picture remains largely unchanged within the states themselves. Out of 1,118 counties in battleground states, only 37 flipped, or 0.3%. But there were a few big changes. Trump chipped away at Biden’s support among Latinos in a few key states. But nationally, voters who identified as moderate or independent swung sharply in Biden’s direction.

FYI: Biden's popular vote lead over Trump has now passed 5 million, according to the Cook Political Report.

YouTube Went Down Briefly Worldwide

Don't worry it's back now

Think about how many people around the world right now, streaming YouTube. And then picture their screens suddenly going dark. All at once—a collective hush where no one asks you to "like and subscribe."

Thankfully, YouTube has since recovered from a seemingly worldwide outage that prevented videos from loading for roughly an hour, reports The Verge.

According to DownDetector.com, at its peak, over a quarter of a million people had reported the outage around the world Wednesday.

In turn, people unable to watch videos took to Twitter to vent about their newfound frustrations with the site and the misguided and regrettable anger towards their router. Complex rounded up some funny tweets as as reminder to slow down and not overreact.

Pharrell Is Launching a Skin-Care Line

The youngest-looking middle-aged man drops the skincare routine

Pharrell Williams is 47 years old, but you'd never know it by looking at his eternally youthful face. And now he's ready to share the secrets of his proverbial fountain of youth.

“I’ve been asked for about 20 years what is your skin-care routine,” he told Yahoo. “I think your skin is the sum of the routines you put into it.”

On Wednesday, the “Entrepreneur” singer announced that his latest business venture is Humanrace—a skin-care line comprised of rice powder cleanser, lotus enzyme exfoliator and humidifying cream, each packaged in emerald green post-consumer waste recycled and refillable packaging.

“Sometimes you need to cleanse your spirit. Sometimes you just need to cleanse your mind. Sometimes you’ve just got to get rid of some dead skin,” Pharrell told Allure. And as someone who understands the restorative nature of a stiff drink and sheet mask, I'm all for this kind of cleansing. Bring on the clear skin and a clear mind.

Get It: The line will be available on November 25, selling individually from $28 or as a complete set for $100.
