Today’s Big Story

Was the Plane Shot Down?

Officials believe an Iranian missile hit the Ukrainian jetliner in an accidental firing

Ukrainian jet debris

Western officials said Thursday that it was “highly likely” that an Iranian anti-aircraft missile downed a Ukrainian jetliner late Tuesday, killing all 176 people on board.

The crash came just a few hours after Iran launched a ballistic missile attack against Iraqi military bases housing US troops amid a confrontation with Washington over the drone strike that killed Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said intelligence analyses indicated that a surface-to-air missile hit the plane in what could have been an “unintentional” act.

Iran has repeatedly rejected theories of a missile strike. A military spokesman on Wednesday called it “ridiculous.” But they're also refusing to hand over the aircraft's black box—which may provide details of the doomed flight's final moments—to Boeing, reports the Washington Post.

video verified by the New York Times appeared to show an Iranian missile exploding near a plane above the area where the jetliner stopped transmitting its signal before it crashed.

And the Times also reports that American satellites, designed to track missile launches, detected the firing of the Iranian short-range interceptor. United States intelligence agencies later picked up Iranian communications confirming that the system brought down the Ukrainian airliner.

Facebook Keeps Targeted Political Ads

While Reddit introduces a superior deepfakes policy

Reddit and Facebook are two very different social media platforms. As true as that may be, however, it's difficult not to conclude “shots fired” with the timing of the former’s newest policy, reports Mashable.

On Thursday, the popular social news site unveiled a brand new policy meant to curb impersonation and maliciously deceptive media on the platform. Essentially Reddit is quashing disinformation on the site—users can't try to pass off as another individual or entity. Fake articles and links are covered under this policy too.

Facebook, however, said it would continue to allow targeted political ads on its platform, despite acknowledging that the spread of disinformation is a problem. According to the Wall Street Journal, it won't fact-check or remove ads that contain falsehoods either. Instead, they'll give users tools to see fewer of those ads on its platforms. Sounds like a "thumbs down" kind of move ...

FYI: Google and Twitter have decided to limit or ban political advertising on their platforms.

Is Almond Milk Evil?

Sending bees to pollinate almond crops is “like sending the bees to war”

I like almond milk. I like it in my coffee or on my cereal. And I'm not alone. In just five years, almond milk consumption in the US has exploded over 250 percent. If you're on team almond with me, well, I've got some disappointing news.

A report by The Guardian found that the booming industry is likely to blame for the rising mortality rate among honey bees. The intense growing demands of the California almond industry are placing a huge strain on the hives of bees used to pollinate their orchards—wiping out billions of honeybees in a matter of months.

“It’s like sending the bees to war. Many don’t come back,” Nate Donley, a senior scientist for the Center for Biological Diversity told The Guardian.

That, on top of the already disturbing fact that it takes over a gallon of water to produce a single almond? Guess I'm going to have to try this oat milk the Hollywood crowd raves about.

FYI: A glass of almond milk has approximately five almonds per serving and is 98.12% water.

Be Your Own Style God

Looking good these days is more about looking authentic

We're living in a great time style-wise. Before, if you wanted to step up and emulate the icons of masculine style—gentleman like Steve McQueen, Paul Newman and Cary Grant—you needed a wardrobe of freshly pressed suits, a European sports car and maybe a new jawline. But today? The pantheon of style has opened up and let in a fresh class of inspiring men.

Looking good these days is more about looking authentic. Does what you have on actually feel like you? Does it suit your personal tastes and complement your personality as much as it does your physique?

For today's installment of "31 Days," we're celebrating Jonah Hill's relaxed yet thoughtful street style edge and A$AP Rocky's willingness to break the rules

The point is this: There's no one way to look good. This is an era of eclectic and accessible style. It's less about one standard uniform and more about expressing what makes you feel good. And it proves that you can be your own style god. Of course, a sports car and a nice watch never hurts.

Other Things We’re Talking About Today

Weekend Pairing

The Talented Mr. Ripley + a Mezcal Negroni Cocktail

Just as more winter storms are due to hit much of the United States, one of my old favorites has come back to Netflix. What better time to relax with a film that features sailboat cruises on the Mediterranean, leisurely cocktail hours, midcentury style and the occasion unsolved murder? Plus, it'll soon be made into a show on Showtime starring Fleabag's Andrew Scott.

Based on the thrilling novel by Patricia Highsmith and produced during Miramax's heyday of the late 1990s, The Talented Mr. Ripley is a rip-roaring Italian travel postcard. If you haven't seen it, or it's been a while, the movie follows Dickie Greenleaf (played by Jude Law), a consummate playboy living off his trust fund who unwittingly takes Tom Ripley (played by Matt Damon) under his wing. But Ripley is a sycophantic and sociopathic buddy who becomes dangerously obsessed with him.

Your Pairing:What better to sip while wishing you were in Italy than a Negroni? But this richly layered variation, from Imbibe, swaps out the gin for a splash of smoky mezcal. The flame-charred flavors add a warm, winter depth to the Campari's sweetly bracing citrus tang. For added Italian flair, garnish with a spring of fresh rosemary (and use a kitchen torch to flame the leaves until they smoke).
