‘Succession’ Is Succeeding

Watching bad people is good, even when it gets ugly

Succession

We’re living in the golden age of television, as they say. Peak TV means there’s far more shows than we can ever stream. The only downside is that series come and go from our consciousness and there are less shows to really get excited about. Squid Game was a surprise hit—not a show we were eagerly anticipating and ready to devour. But Succession is just that.

It is a show that explores power and money and what it means to be a family while measuring your own success and self-worth in a myriad of ways. And it’s now back and better than ever. The show returned for its third season with a nearly 15% increase in viewership since its Season 2 premiere and it has been a constant presence on newspaper and magazine covers.

And on Tuesday, just two episodes into Season 3, the HBO drama was renewed for a fourth season. Of course, it’s not exactly a surprise—the show drew more than 1.4 million viewers across all platforms on its premiere—the best launch night performance of any original series since HBO Max went live.

So what is it about this show? Yes, it’s a show about selfish people. But the new season has thus far specifically probed how selfishness survives, and disguises itself, in a society that likes to believe it is ruled by nobler forces. Everyone in the family is pissed off at everyone else, they’ve all got knives up their sleeves. The black comedy perfectly blends vengeful plotting and familial bonding. Somehow a box of doughnuts creates a major narrative shift?

Some say the show’s success is due to how easy it is to boil down the show to its most immediately hilarious jokes, awkward moments, and jaw-dropping moments. It seems tailor-made for memes.

Because even if you’ve never seen the show (what are you waiting for!?!),  you’ve probably heard about Kendall Roy’s supremely cringey rap, or the line “You can’t make a Tomelette without breaking some Greggs.” Or maybe you’ve seen tweets about how much the theme song is a banger. In any case, I suggest you start watching or get left out of the conversation.

FDA Panel Backs Low-Dose Vaccine for Children

This could expand eligibility to 28 million kids

The U.S. moved a step closer to expanding COVID-19 vaccinations for millions more children as government advisers on Tuesday endorsed kid-size doses of Pfizer's shots for 5- to 11-year-olds.

An FDA advisory panel voted unanimously (with one abstention) that the vaccine's benefits in preventing the virus in that age group outweigh any potential risks. The vaccine is a smaller dose than the one given to those 12 and older—10 micrograms of mRNA versus 30 micrograms.

If authorized, the move would make nearly the entire American population eligible for a shot. Especially as Moderna confirmed earlier in the week that their vaccine generated a strong immune response and was generally well-tolerated by kids as well. Only young children ages 4 and younger would remain ineligible.

Though children are less susceptible to severe illness from Covid, more than 1.9 million children ages 5 to 11 have tested positive for the coronavirus over the course of the pandemic, and more than 8,400 have been hospitalized, reports NBC News.

Meanwhile: A new study confirmed that financial incentives have not increased COVID-19 vaccinations among the vaccine hesitant/resistant.

Oura’s Smart Ring Gets Smarter

Could this be the ultimate wearable tech?

I like classic watches. I sprung for a vintage Rolex but I don't wear it as much as I should. Why? Because I like the data my Apple Watch provides. But if I could get the info while wearing a more traditional timepiece, I would. Which is why I've been eyeing the Oura ring for some time.

It had limitations though—the ring was mainly known for tracking your sleep and recovery. But on Tuesday, the company announced a slew of new updates for the third generation of its sleek, subtle, health-focused wearable.

Oura Health is adding green and red LED sensors in addition to its existing infrared sensors. As a result, users will be able to view daytime activity and live heart rate data. Later this year, the ring will also be capable of recording heart rate during runs, walks and bike rides. Users will then be able to view post-workout insights, as well as activity data like location, distance and heart rate recovery.

And while the Oura Ring is adding more fitness tracker features, it's not straying from its primary mission: sleep. The company says that in 2022, it'll add new and improved sleep stage-tracking, as well as SpO2 data from the new red LEDs.

Get It: The third-generation Oura Ring is $299 ($399 if you want it in gold or a matte grey).

An All-New Range Rover Is Coming

The first redesign in nearly a decade faces some stiff competition

Land Rover just unveiled what will be the first new, redesigned Range Rover in a decade. In the nine years since the introduction of the current Range Rover, the luxury SUV market has undergone a transformational renaissance. What was once the only choice in the segment has had to fend off attacks from Mercedes, BMW and Audi; even Bentley and Lamborghini.

Even Jeep, not previously a competitor, recently introduced the Grand Wagoneer, an opulent off-road-capable SUV that can cost over $100,000 with options. And that's just the gasoline-powered options. Big, electric, high-dollar SUVs like the Tesla Model X and upcoming GMC Hummer EV SUV are coming, as well.

But for 2022, the Range Rover is fighting back, reports Car and Driver. Armed with new technology popularized by its rivals, tweaked styling, and a new ultra-luxury interior, the redesigned Range Rover is coming back for the throne.

Road Show calls it “the future of subtle luxury.” It's got concept-like styling, tons of new tech features and a slick interior. They say the design of the new Range Rover—including multiple wood accents, leather options and even white ceramic—is futuristic and risky without being too crazy. “A smart evolution of the outgoing design that seems fresh and forward-thinking.”
